A Monumental Overhaul
The Indian Railways is in the midst of one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects to date: the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This initiative aims to redevelop over 1,300 stations across the country. The vision extends far beyond routine maintenance,
with the goal of reimagining stations as modern 'City Centres' that serve as vibrant hubs for passengers and the local community alike. Unlike past efforts that were often piecemeal, this scheme is driven by comprehensive, long-term master plans tailored to each station's unique needs, aiming to create a standardized yet locally infused travel experience. Recent years have seen hundreds of stations completed, with a significant nationwide dedication of 75 redeveloped stations in July 2026.
The New Passenger Experience
For millions of travellers, the changes are tangible from the moment they arrive. The redeveloped stations feature aesthetically designed buildings, often inspired by local culture and heritage, creating a distinct sense of place. Inside, passengers are greeted with amenities once considered luxuries, such as clean, modern waiting halls, air-conditioned concourses, and executive lounges. The focus on comfort and convenience is clear, with the inclusion of food courts, retail kiosks under the 'One Station One Product' scheme, and even dedicated play areas for children. Free Wi-Fi, digital passenger information systems, and enhanced lighting are now becoming standard, replacing the confusion of the past with a connected and informed environment.
Accessibility and Safety at the Forefront
A crucial element of this modernization is the emphasis on accessibility for all. Special care has been taken to make stations Divyangjan-friendly, with the installation of lifts, escalators, and ramps to ensure barrier-free movement. Wider foot-over-bridges—some up to 12 metres—are being constructed to ease congestion and improve flow. Safety has also seen a technological leap forward. The deployment of AI-enabled CCTV cameras for surveillance, along with new crowd management systems at major hubs, aims to create a safer environment for the millions who pass through daily. These measures signal a fundamental shift, where the expectation is no longer just to board a train, but to do so in a secure and dignified manner.
Integrated Hubs for Modern Cities
The redevelopment is not confined to the station building itself. A key objective is to integrate the station seamlessly with the urban fabric. This involves developing multimodal connectivity, ensuring smooth transitions between trains, buses, and metro services. The plan also looks at improving the 'first and last mile' experience with better circulating areas, organised parking facilities, and well-planned entry and exit points. By developing both sides of the station where feasible, these projects help bridge urban divides, transforming stations from mere transit points into integrated transport hubs that benefit the entire city.
Setting a New Standard
Ultimately, the modernisation of railway terminals is creating a new baseline for passenger expectations. The airport-like amenities and clean, organised environments are recalibrating what travellers consider acceptable. As more of these upgraded stations become operational, the tolerance for a chaotic, uncomfortable, and disconnected travel experience diminishes. This transformation is not just about steel and concrete; it's about changing mindsets. The new expectation is for a journey that is smooth, safe, and pleasant from the moment one steps into the station, bringing the on-ground experience in line with the advancements seen in India’s new-generation trains.
