What Exactly is Monsoon Withdrawal?
Monsoon withdrawal is the process marking the end of the Southwest Monsoon season in India. Meteorologically, it’s a reversal of the large-scale atmospheric patterns that bring rainy weather. The moisture-heavy south-westerly winds that blow from the sea to
the land begin to weaken and are replaced by drier, cooler north-easterly winds blowing from the land towards the sea. This doesn't happen overnight. It's a slow, phased retreat that can take over a month to complete across the vast expanse of the country. Think of it less as a sudden departure and more as a slow, deliberate march out of the subcontinent, starting from the westernmost parts and gradually moving southeast.
The Official Declaration
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) doesn't declare the monsoon's withdrawal based on the calendar alone. Instead, specific scientific criteria must be met, and the process cannot officially begin before the 1st of September. For the withdrawal to be announced from West Rajasthan, the starting point, there must be a complete cessation of rainfall for five consecutive days. Additionally, an 'anticyclone'—a high-pressure system that pushes air downwards and prevents cloud formation—must establish itself in the lower atmosphere. Finally, satellite imagery must confirm a significant drop in moisture levels. Once these conditions are met in the northwest, the IMD begins tracking the withdrawal line as it moves across the country.
When Does It Typically Happen?
Based on updated data, the normal date for the monsoon to begin its withdrawal from the extreme northwestern parts of India is around September 17. This is a significant shift from older calculations that placed the date closer to September 1. From there, it's a staggered process. The withdrawal line typically crosses Central India by late September or early October, and the monsoon finally leaves the southern peninsula around mid-October. This means that on the same day in late September, Delhi could be experiencing dry, post-monsoon weather while Kerala is still receiving heavy monsoon showers.
Signs of Transition You Can Spot
Even before the official announcements, you can often feel the change in the air. The constant, oppressive humidity begins to drop, especially in the afternoons. The skies, once uniformly grey and overcast, start showing larger patches of blue. While there might still be occasional showers, they become less frequent and widespread. Mornings and evenings feel crister and cooler, a welcome respite from the sticky heat. The character of the clouds changes, with puffy cumulus clouds replacing the vast, dark rain-bearing sheets of the peak monsoon.
Life After the Southwest Monsoon
The end of the monsoon is a critical time, especially for agriculture. The September rains are vital for maturing summer-sown (Kharif) crops and, more importantly, for providing the necessary soil moisture for planting winter (Rabi) crops like wheat, rapeseed, and chickpeas. A dry end to the monsoon can put stress on both harvests. For the rest of us, the transition brings a change in health concerns, with the risk of water-borne diseases like cholera and typhoid slowly being replaced by respiratory issues common in drier, dustier weather. On a brighter note, the clearer skies and pleasant weather usher in India's main festival season, providing a perfect backdrop for celebrations.
Enter the Northeast Monsoon
Just as the Southwest Monsoon withdraws, another weather system prepares its entrance. Known as the Northeast or 'retreating' monsoon, this pattern brings rain from October to December. The now-dry winds blowing from the north-east over the landmass pick up moisture as they cross the Bay of Bengal. This system is crucial for several southern states, bringing significant rainfall to Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Kerala and Karnataka. For Tamil Nadu, in particular, this is the primary rainy season, accounting for a large portion of its annual rainfall.
