A Major Boost for Festive Travellers
To manage the immense passenger surge expected for Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, Central Railway has announced a plan to run 418 special train services during October and November 2026. This initiative is designed to connect key hubs like Mumbai
and Pune with numerous destinations across the country, directly addressing the high demand that typically leaves millions of travellers on long waiting lists. The services will operate from major Mumbai terminals, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), aiming to ease the bottleneck for those heading home for the holidays.
Connecting Mumbai to Key Destinations
These special services cast a wide net, providing crucial connectivity to states with high passenger traffic during festivals. A significant number of trains are scheduled for destinations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, traditional high-demand corridors. Daily services between CSMT and Gorakhpur will run throughout the peak festive month. Additionally, routes will extend to West Bengal and several states in South India, including Tamil Nadu (Chennai), Karnataka (Bengaluru), and Kerala. Within Maharashtra, special services will also connect Mumbai to cities like Nagpur, Latur, and Kolhapur, ensuring better intra-state travel options.
What Kind of Trains to Expect
The fleet of special trains includes a variety of classes to cater to different budgets and comfort levels. Passengers can find options ranging from AC coaches (First, 2-tier, and 3-tier) to Sleeper class and unreserved General Second Class compartments. For instance, the route between CSMT and Chennai will feature weekly AC special services. Similarly, weekly AC trains will run between CSMT and Bengaluru. Many services, such as those to Latur and Nagpur, will offer a mix of AC, Sleeper, and General coaches, providing a broad spectrum of choices for travellers. These trains operate on special fares, which are typically 10% to 30% higher than standard base fares to cover operational costs.
How and When to Book Your Tickets
Securing a seat on these trains requires prompt action. Bookings for these festive specials opened on September 27 and 28, 2026. Passengers are urged to book their tickets as early as possible to avoid disappointment. The primary platforms for booking are the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) and its mobile app. Tickets can also be purchased at all computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at railway stations. For those planning to travel in unreserved coaches, tickets can be booked via the UTS mobile app. Given the high demand, authorities recommend checking for real-time availability and updates on the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) portal.
More Than Just Extra Seats
The introduction of 418 special services is about more than just increasing capacity; it's about providing genuine alternatives and flexibility. For many, it means a confirmed berth instead of a long waitlist, reducing the uncertainty that plagues festive travel planning. These trains often operate on schedules designed to complement the existing network, offering different departure times and sometimes covering slightly different routes or halts. This gives passengers more options to find a journey that fits their specific needs. By significantly boosting the number of available seats on the most congested routes, the railway aims to make the annual journey home a more manageable and less stressful experience for everyone.
