Essentials for Any Sunrise Trek
Before you set off, a little preparation goes a long way. For any early morning trek, a headlamp or torch is non-negotiable. Wear comfortable trekking shoes with good grip, as these trails involve rocky patches. Dress in layers; it can be chilly at the summit
before sunrise, so a light jacket is essential. Carry at least 1-2 litres of water per person and some high-energy snacks like nuts or fruit. A small backpack to keep your hands free is crucial for balance on uneven terrain. Finally, ensure your phone is fully charged for navigation and, of course, for those stunning sunrise photos.
Skandagiri: The Sea of Clouds
Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga, is famous for its magical sunrise views, where you often find yourself standing above a floating sea of clouds. Located about 60-70 km from Bengaluru, this trek is of moderate difficulty, involving an 8 km round trip on a rocky and sometimes steep trail. The ascent typically takes 2 to 2.5 hours. What makes Skandagiri unique is the mandatory pre-booking system managed by the Karnataka Ecotourism board. On-the-spot entries are not allowed, so you must book your slot online in advance. Night trekking is the popular option, usually starting around 4 AM to reach the peak just before dawn. At the summit, you'll find the ruins of an 18th-century fort once used by Tipu Sultan and a small Shiva temple, adding a historical touch to your adventure.
Nandi Hills: The Classic Choice
Nandi Hills is arguably the most popular sunrise spot near Bengaluru, and for good reason. It is highly accessible, located just 60 km from the city. You have two options: drive all the way to the top or trek up the 1,175 stone steps from the base. The trek is considered easy to moderate and takes about 45-60 minutes. Gates officially open at 6:00 AM, but crowds, especially on weekends, gather much earlier. To secure a good viewing spot, it's wise to leave Bengaluru by 3:30 AM. While it can get crowded, the panoramic view from the top, often with a blanket of mist in the valley below, remains a quintessential Bengaluru experience suitable for families and beginners. Unlike Skandagiri, no special trekking permit is needed, but vehicle entry fees apply.
Savandurga: The Monolithic Challenge
Known as one of the largest monolith hills in Asia, Savandurga offers a more challenging and adventurous trek. Situated around 50 km from Bengaluru, it consists of two main trails: Billigudda (the white hill) and Karigudda (the black hill). The Billigudda trail is more popular and leads to the summit. The trek is rated moderate to difficult due to its steep, exposed rock faces that can be slippery. This trek is less about a forested path and more about ascending a giant rock. The round trip is about 5 km and can take 4-5 hours. Your reward is a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape, including the Manchanabele Reservoir. Due to the terrain, it's best to avoid this trek during the monsoon. For sunrise, an early start around 5 AM is recommended to conquer the climb before the sun gets too harsh.
