October's Key Banking Holidays
October 2026 features a mix of national and significant regional bank holidays that will see branches shut their doors. The most important date for everyone across India is Friday, October 2, for Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday where all banks will be closed.
Following this, the festive season brings Dussehra (also known as Vijayadashami), which will lead to widespread bank closures. While the exact dates vary by state, most banks will be closed on Tuesday, October 20. Some states will also observe holidays on the preceding or following days, such as for Maha Navami on October 19 or Vijaya Dasami on October 21. Banks are also closed on the second and fourth Saturdays (October 10 and October 24) and all Sundays, adding to the non-working days you need to account for.
Digital Payments: Mostly Business as Usual
The good news is that India's digital payment infrastructure is designed to operate around the clock. Services like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) are available 24/7, 365 days a year, regardless of bank holidays. This makes them ideal for urgent, small-to-medium value transactions. You can continue to send and receive money, pay bills, and make online purchases without interruption using your mobile banking apps or third-party payment platforms. These services function seamlessly even when bank branches are physically closed.
NEFT and RTGS: Online, But With Caveats
For larger fund transfers, National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) and Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) are the go-to methods. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made both systems available 24/7 for online transactions. This means you can initiate a transfer at any time, even on a holiday. However, there's a critical difference. While the systems are automated, transactions may still be subject to review or require manual intervention by bank staff for security or compliance reasons. If a transaction is flagged after hours or on a holiday, it may not be processed until the next working day when staff are available. Therefore, while you can initiate these payments, their final settlement for very large amounts or unusual transactions might be delayed until banks reopen. Branch-based NEFT and RTGS services will be completely unavailable on holidays.
Cheques, Drafts, and Branch Services
Any banking task that requires a physical branch visit or manual processing will come to a standstill on holidays. This includes depositing or clearing cheques, creating demand drafts, and applying for loans or other financial products. Cheque clearing operates on working days, so a cheque deposited right before a holiday or a long weekend will experience significant delays in clearing and crediting. For example, a cheque deposited on Thursday, October 1, may not clear until Monday, October 5, due to the Gandhi Jayanti holiday on Friday. Plan any paper-based transactions well in advance of the holiday dates to avoid liquidity issues.
Your Pre-Holiday Payment Checklist
To ensure your important payments go through smoothly in October, follow these simple steps. First, review all your upcoming time-sensitive payments, such as loan EMIs, credit card bills, vendor payments, or salary disbursements. Schedule any large transfers via NEFT or RTGS at least one to two business days before a bank holiday to ensure timely settlement. For last-minute needs, rely on UPI and IMPS, but be mindful of their transaction limits. If you anticipate needing cash, withdraw it from an ATM ahead of time, as machines in high-traffic areas can sometimes run dry during extended holiday periods. Finally, if you have a critical transaction that might require assistance, contact your bank's customer service before the holiday begins.
