Similarly, Mumbaikars can explore Vadodara's palaces and artistic heritage without dedicating a full day just to travel. The eight-lane, access-controlled highway is designed for speeds up to 120 km/h, ensuring a smooth and efficient drive.
Ahmedabad to Dholera in Under an Hour
The Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway is poised to redefine connectivity between Gujarat's commercial capital and the emerging Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR). This 109-km, four-lane greenfield expressway will reduce the current travel time of over two hours to just 40-45 minutes. While Dholera itself is an industrial hub, this route opens up the coastal Bhavnagar region for weekend exploration from Ahmedabad. With the project nearing completion and expected to be operational in 2026, travellers can look forward to accessing the Velavadar Blackbuck National Park or the seaside town of Gopnath far more easily. The expressway provides a direct link from Ahmedabad's Sardar Patel Ring Road to the coastal belt, making it a crucial artery for both business and leisure.
Surat to Udaipur by Vande Bharat Express
Rail travel has also seen a major boost. In a significant move for South Gujarat, the Ministry of Railways has approved a new Vande Bharat Express connecting Surat with Udaipur in Rajasthan. This gives Surat its first Vande Bharat train and establishes a direct, high-speed link to the 'City of Lakes'. The journey is expected to take approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes, running six days a week. This new service makes a weekend trip to Udaipur's palaces, lakes, and vibrant markets a practical reality for residents of Surat and surrounding areas like Bharuch and Anand, which are designated stops. The service is anticipated to begin before the Navratri festival, generating excitement among tourists and regular travellers alike.
Strengthening the Coastal Highway
For those who love coastal drives, ongoing enhancements to Gujarat's coastal highway are unlocking scenic routes. A key project is the new 18-kilometre coastal road connecting Surat (Hazira) and Bharuch, which will reduce the travel distance from 55 km to nearly 40 km. This not only eases industrial traffic but also creates a more direct path for tourists exploring the South Gujarat coastline, including the historic Dandi beach. Further up the coast, the state has proposed a massive 1,630-km coastal corridor from Umargam to Narayan Sarovar in Kutch. As sections of this grand project are completed, it will create one of India's most epic road trips, seamlessly connecting religious sites like Somnath and Dwarka with beaches and wildlife sanctuaries.
Boosting Rail Links to Central Gujarat and Beyond
Several railway projects are set to improve connectivity within the state and to neighbouring regions. The doubling of the 33-km Vishwamitri-Dabhoi line is particularly noteworthy for tourists, as it will improve rail capacity and convenience for those travelling towards the Statue of Unity. Furthermore, the foundation stone has been laid for adding third and fourth railway lines between Vadodara and Ratlam (Madhya Pradesh).
