A new chapter in Indian rail travel begins as the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express connects Bengaluru and Mumbai. This overnight service promises to slash travel time and redefine comfort between India's tech hub and its financial capital.
A Game-Changer for a Crucial Route
The introduction
of the Vande Bharat Sleeper on the Bengaluru-Mumbai corridor is a significant upgrade for one of India's busiest travel routes. Historically, passengers faced journeys of 22 to 24 hours on conventional express trains. The new semi-high-speed service cuts this down to approximately 16 hours, saving travelers nearly a full working day. The inaugural service was flagged off on November 1, 2026, with regular commercial runs starting from Mumbai on November 2 and from Bengaluru on November 3. The train will run six days a week, connecting Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai.
Schedule and Stoppages
Designed for overnight convenience, the train allows passengers to travel while they sleep and arrive refreshed the next day. Train No. 27652 departs from SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 PM and reaches CSMT Mumbai at 11:55 AM the following day. In the return direction, Train No. 27651 leaves CSMT Mumbai at 8:10 PM and arrives at SMVT Bengaluru at 12:00 PM (noon) the next day. The service connects key stations across three states: Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Major halts include Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Guntakal, and Anantapur, strengthening connectivity for several important regional centres along the way.
Inside the Modern Sleeper
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is a far cry from traditional overnight trains. The 16-coach rake accommodates 823 passengers across three classes: AC First Class (1A), AC 2-Tier (2A), and AC 3-Tier (3A). The coaches are designed with improved soundproofing for a quieter journey and feature automatic doors and sealed gangways to reduce jerks and noise. Berths are wider and better cushioned, with ergonomically designed ladders for easier access to upper berths. Each passenger gets access to individual reading lights, charging points, and both Type-A and Type-C USB ports. First AC passengers will have the added luxury of hot shower facilities.
Safety and Amenities
Safety is a core focus of the new sleeper train. It is equipped with the Kavach anti-collision system, CCTV cameras for surveillance, and advanced fire detection and suppression systems. The coaches are built with crash-compliant designs and firendard materials. In terms of amenities, passengers can expect modern bio vacuum toilets with touch free fittings to enhance hygiene. The train also features a passenger information system, Wi Fi connectivity for infotainment, and ample luggage space. On board catering will be available, offering both vegetarian and non vegetarian meal options.
Fares and Booking
The fare structure positions the Vande Bharat Sleeper as a premium service that competes favorably with last minute flights and offers more comfort than bus travel. For the full journey between Bengaluru and Mumbai, fares are approximately ₹2,810 for AC 3 Tier, ₹3,630 for AC 2 Tier, and ₹4,450 for AC First Class. These prices offer a compelling alternative, especially when considering the high cost of last minute air travel and associated expenses like airport transfers. The service aims to attract business travelers, IT professionals, students, and families looking for a blend of speed, comfort, and convenience.
