The Five-Fold Capacity Jump
Indian Railways has announced a monumental upgrade to its core Passenger Reservation System (PRS), the digital backbone of its entire ticketing network. The new system is designed to handle over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute. This represents a nearly
five-fold increase from the previous capacity, which hovered around 32,000 bookings per minute. This is not just a minor tweak; it's a quantum leap intended to make the booking process significantly faster and more reliable for millions of passengers. The phased rollout of this next-generation system began in August 2026, marking a new era for railway digitalisation in the country. This upgrade, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), aims to tackle one of the biggest bottlenecks in Indian travel.
Why This Upgrade Was Desperately Needed
The existing Passenger Reservation System, though a pioneer when first introduced, was struggling to keep up with modern demand. The previous version of the core system was deployed back in 2010. In the years since, online ticketing has exploded. Between June 2025 and June 2026 alone, a staggering 89% of the 65.08 crore reserved tickets were booked online. This massive shift to digital channels placed immense strain on the older infrastructure. Peak booking hours, especially during the Tatkal window, would generate huge traffic spikes that the system often couldn't handle, leading to the infamous website crashes, payment failures, and the dreaded 'spinning wheel' of uncertainty that so many travellers have experienced. The 40-year-old foundational system was simply not built for this level of simultaneous digital traffic.
The Real-World Impact for Passengers
So, what does this technical upgrade actually mean for you? The most immediate benefit is expected during high-demand periods. The frantic morning rush for Tatkal tickets could become significantly less stressful, as the system will now be robust enough to handle the surge in users without buckling. Beyond bookings, the capacity for handling passenger enquiries—such as checking PNR status, seat availability, and waitlist positions—is also seeing a tenfold increase, jumping from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. This means getting real-time information should be quicker and more reliable. In tandem with this backend upgrade, a new beta version of the IRCTC website was launched in July 2026, featuring a simpler interface and fewer steps to book a ticket, aiming for a smoother end-to-end user experience. Early data from this beta site already showed a 5% increase in Tatkal bookings completed within the first three minutes.
A Phased Rollout for a Stable Transition
This massive overhaul is not happening overnight. Indian Railways is taking a cautious, phased approach to the migration. Instead of a sudden switch, the new cloud-based system is being introduced gradually and tested under varying levels of user traffic. This 'slow and steady' method ensures that any potential issues are ironed out without causing major disruptions to a service that is used around the clock by millions. Officials have stated that trains are being moved to the upgraded system progressively. This strategy allows for layer-by-layer matching and load-based testing to ensure the new platform is stable and reliable before the old PRS is completely phased out. This careful transition aims to provide a seamless upgrade for the 20.5 lakh passengers who book tickets daily.
