Fewer Interruptions and a Cleaner Interface
Perhaps the most welcome change for regular users is the significantly cleaner booking interface. The new design aims to reduce the distractions that plagued the old site, such as excessive pop-up ads and flashing banners. More importantly, the system
promises fewer CAPTCHA verifications during the booking process, a common frustration that often slowed down users at critical moments, especially during the high-stakes Tatkal rush. The goal is a more streamlined path from searching for a train to confirming your ticket, with a lighter design that helps pages load faster even on slower connections.
Saved Passenger Details for Faster Bookings
While not entirely new, the 'Master List' feature is now more crucial than ever for saving time. This function allows you to save the details of frequently travelling passengers—including yourself, family, and friends—directly to your profile. You can pre-fill names, ages, ID card information, and berth preferences. When you book a ticket, instead of typing everything out, you simply select the passengers from your saved list, and the details are auto-filled. This is especially useful for group travel and absolutely essential for Tatkal bookings where every second counts. You can create and manage this list under the 'My Profile' section on the website or the Rail Connect app.
See All Class Availability on One Screen
Previously, checking for seat availability meant toggling between different classes like Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier one by one. The revamped website introduces a unified seat availability view. Now, you can see the number of available seats across all classes for a particular train on a single screen. This small but significant change saves a surprising amount of time and scrolling, allowing you to quickly compare options and make a decision without having to repeatedly go back and modify your search.
Compare Fares with the New Fare Calendar
For travellers with flexible dates, the new fare calendar is a game-changing tool. This feature allows you to see and compare ticket prices across different dates in a single view. Instead of searching day by day, you can easily spot when fares are lower, which is particularly helpful for avoiding price hikes during festivals or long weekends. This helps you find the most budget-friendly day for your journey, saving both time and money.
Choose Your Preferred Seat
Taking a cue from airline and movie theatre bookings, the new IRCTC website will allow passengers to select their preferred seats. While booking, you can view the seat map and choose your desired spot, whether you prefer a window seat for the view or an aisle seat for convenience. This gives you more control over your travel experience, a significant upgrade from the previous system where seats were assigned more or less at random.
Enhanced Accessibility and Capacity
The platform has also been upgraded to be more inclusive. It now supports multiple Indian languages, making it accessible to a wider audience beyond just English and Hindi speakers. Additionally, services for Divyangjan, students, and patients, which often required separate booking processes for concessions, have been integrated into the main platform for a more unified experience. Behind the scenes, the system's capacity has been massively increased to handle up to 1.5 lakh bookings per minute, a five-fold increase designed to prevent crashes during peak hours.
