Why the Big Change to Digital?
The UK government's shift to eVisas is part of a broader global trend to digitise border and immigration systems. The primary goals are to enhance security and improve efficiency. An eVisa cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with in the way a physical document can, which helps safeguard against identity fraud. For travellers, it promises a more streamlined experience. You no longer need to submit your passport and wait for it to be returned with a sticker, which can speed up preparations for travel. The system also makes it easier for visa holders to prove their status to third parties like employers or landlords in the UK by generating a secure 'share code' from their online account.
Your New Travel Journey: How It Works
Once your visa application is approved, you will receive a decision via email, which will instruct you to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account. This account is where your eVisa lives. Before you travel, you must log in, link your passport to your UKVI account, and check that all your details—such as your name, date of birth, and visa conditions—are correct. At the airport check-in desk and upon arrival at the UK border, you simply present the passport that is linked to your eVisa. The airline staff and border force officers will scan your passport to access your digital immigration status in their systems. It is mandatory for airlines to check for this digital permission before allowing you to board.
What If I Have an Existing Sticker Visa?
If you already have a valid, long-term visa sticker (vignette) or a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card, your immigration status is not affected by this change. Your existing physical document remains a valid proof of your right to be in the UK until it expires. However, the UK government has been urging all holders of physical documents to create a UKVI account to view and manage their immigration status online, as this digital record will eventually become the sole method of proof.
