Dubai, a city known for its architectural marvels and luxurious ambitions, is set to add another glittering entry to its list of attractions. A new plan is underway to enhance its famed Gold District with a unique golden draw for all.
Walking on Gold
In a move that could
only happen in Dubai, the city is literally paving a path with gold. The new centerpiece of the expanded Dubai Gold District is a planned 24-carat gold walkway, touted as the first and longest of its kind in the world. Recent announcements from officials confirm the project is scheduled to open before the end of 2026, offering residents and tourists a chance to stroll along a path shimmering with real gold. While specific construction details remain under wraps, the walkway is designed to be more than just a path; it's an immersive experience meant to solidify the district's status as a must-visit destination. This initiative takes the city's nickname, 'City of Gold', from a metaphor to a tangible reality.
A Modernised Souk Experience
This golden walkway is the headline feature of the broader Dubai Gold District, a major development launched in January 2026 by developer Ithra Dubai. The project is not replacing the historic Gold Souk but rather expanding and modernising the area around it. The district now brings together over 1,000 retailers, encompassing not just jewellery but also bullion trading, wholesale operations, perfumes, and cosmetics. This creates a comprehensive ecosystem for the entire gold and jewellery value chain. Major international and regional brands like Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Tanishq, and Joyalukkas have committed to opening significant stores in the district, with some planning their largest Middle East outlets there.
Polishing the Crown Jewel of Dubai's Economy
The development of the Dubai Gold District is a strategic economic move. Gold is deeply woven into the city's commercial fabric, and the UAE stands as one of the world's largest physical gold trading hubs. In the 2024-2025 period alone, the country exported over USD 53 billion worth of gold. By investing in infrastructure like the Gold District and its 'Gold Street', Dubai aims to reinforce its global leadership in the precious metals trade. The district is already seeing results, with a reported 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new retail stores since the start of 2026. Expansion is already underway to meet the growing demand from companies eager to set up operations.
More Than a Market, A Destination
The vision for the Dubai Gold District extends beyond commerce. By creating unique attractions like the gold walkway and consolidating worldclass retailers, the city is enhancing the area for both residents and the millions of tourists who visit each year. The plan includes the addition of six new hotels to support the influx of international visitors and trade professionals. This aligns with Dubai's broader strategy of creating landmark destinations that blend retail, culture, and entertainment. The district sits near the historic Dubai Creek and other traditional markets like the Spice Souk and Perfume Souk, offering visitors a rich, multi faceted cultural experience. The goal is to create a vibrant hub where people can shop for high quality, government regulated jewellery, experience a piece of Dubai's heritage, and witness its ambitious future.
