A Commercial Leap in Lunar Fashion
The next astronauts to walk on the Moon will be wearing the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU. Developed by Houston-based Axiom Space under a major NASA contract, these suits are a prime example of the agency's strategy to partner with private
industry for critical space exploration hardware. Building upon years of NASA's own research, Axiom has engineered a suit designed not just for survival, but for complex work. The AxEMU is part of a service model where NASA procures spacesuit capabilities from commercial partners, a shift from the decades when the agency designed and built all its own hardware in-house. This approach aims to foster innovation while managing costs, with Axiom tasked to deliver the suits for the landmark Artemis III mission, which will land humans on the Moon for the first time since 1972.
Engineered for Unprecedented Agility
The key upgrade in the AxEMU is its remarkable flexibility. The Apollo suits were notoriously rigid, making it difficult for astronauts to bend over, kneel, or even walk naturally. In contrast, the AxEMU incorporates a mix of advanced soft and hard joints at the waist, knees, and shoulders. This enhanced range of motion will allow astronauts to perform tasks that were once Herculean efforts, such as squatting to pick up rock samples, kneeling to set up scientific instruments, and navigating uneven terrain with greater ease and stability. The suit is designed to enable up to eight hours of surface activity, a significant increase over most Apollo moonwalks, supported by a revamped life-support backpack with better cooling and resource management.
Why Mobility Matters at the South Pole
The push for greater flexibility isn't just about comfort; it's mission-critical. The Artemis program is targeting the Moon's South Pole, a region vastly different from the equatorial sites visited by Apollo. This area is characterized by extreme temperature swings and long, dark shadows, with some craters in permanent darkness where temperatures can plummet to minus 240 degrees Celsius. Scientists believe these permanently shadowed regions may hold vast deposits of water ice, a resource that could be vital for future long-term lunar bases. Exploring these rugged, cratered landscapes requires astronauts to be nimble. They will need to walk into and out of shadowed areas, traverse tricky slopes, and conduct detailed geological work, all of which demand a level of dexterity the old suits simply could not provide.
Leaving the Bunny Hop Behind
The AxEMU represents a generational leap from its predecessors. Beyond mobility, it features a rear-entry hatch, allowing astronauts to get in and out more easily than the multi-part Apollo suits. It also boasts a design that can be adjusted to fit a much wider range of body types, a crucial improvement for ensuring more astronauts can perform spacewalks. While early prototypes were shown in a dark fabric, the final moon-bound versions will be white to reflect the harsh sunlight and protect the astronaut from overheating. The new suit also integrates modern necessities like helmet-mounted HD cameras and lights to aid in exploration, particularly in the poorly lit polar regions. These advancements move astronauts from merely surviving on the lunar surface to thriving as effective field scientists.
