Start with Smart Skin Prep
The foundation of any long-lasting makeup look begins before you even pick up a brush. During the humid monsoon season, your skin can become oilier. Start with a gentle cleanser to create a clean canvas. Follow this with a lightweight, water-based or gel
moisturiser to hydrate without adding grease. An often-overlooked trick is to gently rub an ice cube over your face for a few seconds; this can help minimise pores and reduce sweating, giving your makeup a better chance to stay put.
Never Skip Primer
Think of primer as the essential raincoat for your skin. It creates a barrier between your skin’s natural oils and your makeup, preventing it from breaking down. For rainy weather, a mattifying or silicone-based primer is your best bet. It fills in pores and creates a smooth, even surface, ensuring your foundation grips better and lasts significantly longer through humidity and drizzle. Apply a thin layer and give it a minute to set before moving on.
Lighten Your Base
Heavy, full-coverage foundations are prone to looking cakey and streaky in humid conditions. The mantra for monsoon is 'less is more'. Opt for lightweight alternatives like a BB cream, CC cream, or a tinted moisturiser. These products provide enough coverage to even out your skin tone but are breathable enough to withstand the sticky weather. If you need more coverage, spot-conceal with a waterproof concealer only where necessary.
Embrace Waterproof Eye Makeup
Raccoon eyes are the number one fear during a downpour. This is where waterproof formulas become non-negotiable. Invest in a reliable waterproof mascara and eyeliner to prevent smudging and running. When it comes to eyeshadow, cream-based formulas often hold up better in humidity than powders, as they are less likely to crease. If you prefer powder eyeshadow, always use an eyeshadow primer to lock the colour in place.
Choose Your Cheek and Lip Colour Wisely
While some experts suggest powder blushes to absorb oil, others find that cream formulas can melt into the skin for a more natural, durable finish, especially if you set them properly. For lips, glossy and overly creamy lipsticks are likely to feather and smudge. Instead, opt for long-lasting matte liquid lipsticks or lip stains. These formulas are designed to set and stay put, giving you vibrant colour that won't budge, rain or shine.
Set It and Forget It
Once your makeup is complete, locking it in is the final, crucial step. Use a translucent setting powder, focusing on areas that tend to get oily, like your T-zone, under your eyes, and around your chin. Use a fluffy brush for a light dusting or a powder puff to gently press the powder into the skin for extra hold. The final seal is a good setting spray. A few spritzes will create a protective film over your makeup, shielding it from moisture and ensuring it stays flawless all day.
