Verify Your Driving Licence and Permit
Before you even look at insurance, check your documents. To drive legally in most countries, you'll need more than your standard Indian driving licence. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a required document that translates your domestic licence into
multiple languages. You can apply for an IDP online through the Parivahan Sewa portal or in person at your local RTO. You'll typically need your valid licence, passport, visa copies, and photos. An insurer will reject any claim if you have an accident while driving without the correct legal documentation for that country.
Medical Coverage Is Your Top Priority
While the driving aspect is key, the core of any good travel policy is emergency medical coverage. Your domestic health insurance likely offers limited or no coverage overseas. Look for a policy with high coverage for emergency medical expenses, including hospitalisation. Given that road accidents can be serious, robust medical cover is non-negotiable. Furthermore, ensure the plan includes emergency medical evacuation, which covers the high cost of getting you to a suitable hospital or back home if necessary. For Gen Z travellers, who show a high preference for health-related coverage, this is the most critical part of the policy.
Distinguish Car Insurance from Travel Insurance
It's crucial to understand that the insurance you get from the car rental company is different from your personal travel insurance. The rental company’s policy, often called a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), primarily covers damage to or theft of the vehicle itself. Your travel insurance, on the other hand, covers you—the traveller. This includes your medical expenses, lost baggage, and trip cancellations. Some travel insurance plans offer a 'rental vehicle excess cover' which can reimburse you for the high deductible you'd have to pay the rental company if the car is damaged. However, this doesn't replace the primary car insurance you need from the rental agency.
Look for Personal Liability Coverage
What happens if you cause an accident that results in injury to someone else or damage to their property? This is where personal liability coverage comes in. Standard rental car insurance often has gaps here, and third-party liability is legally required in most countries. A good travel insurance policy for a self-drive trip will include personal liability coverage, protecting you from potentially huge legal and compensation costs if you are found at fault in an accident. Without it, you could be personally responsible for covering these expenses.
Check Exclusions for Adventure and Off-roading
Gen Z trips often involve more than just sticking to the highway. If your road trip includes scenic detours on unpaved roads or you plan to engage in adventure sports like hiking, skiing, or bungee jumping at your destination, check the policy's exclusions. Most standard travel insurance plans explicitly exclude high-risk activities and may not cover accidents that happen 'off-road'. If adventure is on your itinerary, you will likely need to buy a specific 'adventure sports' add-on to ensure you're covered for any injuries sustained during these activities.
Understand the Rules on Alcohol
This is a simple but critical point. Virtually all travel insurance policies have a strict exclusion for incidents that occur while you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you are involved in a car accident and medical reports show you were intoxicated, your claim for both medical expenses and any vehicle-related damage will almost certainly be denied. This holds true even if you feel you were not impaired; what matters is what is documented. Being responsible is key to ensuring your policy remains valid.
Ensure It’s a Digital-First Service
As a digitally native generation, your insurance should match your lifestyle. Look for an insurer that offers a seamless digital experience. This includes a mobile app for policy management, easy online claims submission, and 24/7 access to an assistance helpline. The last thing you want during an emergency in a foreign country is to be stuck navigating a complicated, paper-based claims process. Check for reviews on their customer service and claims handling process before you buy.
