There’s a unique magic to hitting the road in winter. The air is crisp, the sun feels gentle, and familiar landscapes transform under a soft mist or a blanket of snow. For those who love to drive, this is the season to explore India’s incredible diversity.
Guwahati to Tawang: The Himalayan Adventure
This is a journey for the truly adventurous. The road from Guwahati in Assam to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh is a breathtaking expedition through the heart of the Eastern Himalayas. Spanning nearly 500 kilometres, this drive is not for the faint of heart, especially in winter. The route takes you through rolling plains, dense forests, and finally, into the high-altitude splendour of Arunachal. In winter, the upper reaches, particularly the famous Sela Pass, are often covered in a thick blanket of snow, creating a surreal white landscape. The drive becomes challenging with rugged roads and sharp bends, but the reward is unparalleled views of snow-dusted peaks, frozen lakes, and ancient monasteries. The recent opening of the Sela Tunnel has made the route more accessible year-round, bypassing the highest point of the pass, but it's still a demanding drive. A crucial tip: an Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for entering Arunachal Pradesh, so plan ahead. The journey is as much about the drive as it is about the destination, with stops like the Nameri National Park and Dirang valley along the way.
Shimla to Manali: A Classic Mountain Drive
The drive between Shimla and Manali is a quintessential Himalayan road trip, made even more special in winter. The approximately 250-kilometre journey can take about 8-10 hours, winding alongside the Beas River through towns like Mandi and Kullu. While the main highway is generally kept clear, the surrounding deodar forests and mountains are often draped in snow, creating picture-perfect moments at every turn. This route is more accessible than the extreme Himalayan passes, making it suitable for those looking for a manageable snow-filled adventure. Stop in Kullu to see traditional shawl weaving factories or enjoy the crisp mountain air at a riverside café. Once in Manali, the nearby Solang Valley becomes a hub for winter sports. Unlike the summer rush, a winter drive here feels more serene, allowing you to truly soak in the majestic tranquillity of Himachal Pradesh. Be sure to check road conditions before you start, especially after a fresh spell of snowfall.
Jodhpur to Jaisalmer: The Desert Odyssey
A road trip through Rajasthan in the summer can be punishing, but winter transforms the desert into a driver’s paradise. The journey from the Blue City of Jodhpur to the Golden City of Jaisalmer is one of India's most iconic desert drives. The approximately 285-kilometre route along smooth highways like NH11 is a breeze, typically taking five to six hours. The winter sun is mild and pleasant, perfect for rolling down the windows and watching the arid landscape unfold. The traffic thins out significantly as you leave Jodhpur, giving you a sense of true freedom on the open road. The highlight is arriving in Jaisalmer, where the magnificent fort appears on the horizon like a sandcastle from a dream. The comfortable daytime temperatures, which hover between 15°C and 25°C, are ideal for exploring forts and indulging in a desert safari and camping under the stars—an experience made magical by the chilly desert nights.
Mumbai to Goa: The Coastal Escape
The Mumbai to Goa drive is a rite of passage for many,
and winter is arguably the best time to do it.
The post monsoon greenery is still lush,
and weather is perfectly pleasant,
without intense humidity or slippery roads.
You have two main choices:
the faster NH48 via Pune or scenic NH66.
For enthusiasts,
NH66 offers glimpses of Arabian Sea,
Konkan villages,
and winding Western Ghats roads.
The roughly $600$-km journey can be covered in $10$-$12$ hours,
but it’s best enjoyed with an overnight halt.
Winter also means fewer crowds than peak December,
allowing for relaxed experiences at roadside dhabas and beach shacks.
