India is embracing a new era of regional air travel with the introduction of commercial seaplane services designed to link major cities with remote and beautiful coastal destinations. This initiative, supported by the government's focus on enhancing last-mile
connectivity, is set to revolutionise tourism by making previously hard-to-reach areas more accessible. New operators like SkyHop Aviation have recently received the green light to begin operations, signalling a significant development in the country's aviation sector. These services eliminate the need for traditional runway infrastructure, allowing aircraft to operate directly from rivers, lakes, and coastal waters. This capability is perfect for regions like the archipelagos of Lakshadweep and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, as well as the extensive backwaters and coastlines of states like Kerala and Goa.
Charting the New Scenic Routes
The initial focus for these new operations is on high-potential tourism circuits. One of the most anticipated launches connects Kochi with several islands in Lakshadweep, including Agatti, Kavaratti, and Kalpeni. This route drastically cuts travel time from an overnight ferry journey to a flight of about 80-90 minutes. Other potential routes that have been part of trials and discussions include connecting the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad to the Statue of Unity, various points in the Kerala Backwaters, and creating coastal circuits in Goa and Andhra Pradesh. Airlines like SpiceJet have also announced ambitious plans to connect around 20 routes, covering locations from Guwahati and Shillong to Hyderabad and Lakshadweep, once the necessary waterdrome infrastructure is in place.
