Forget Japan in spring. India has its own breathtaking cherry blossom season, and it happens every autumn in Meghalaya. In November, the hills of Shillong burst into shades of pink, creating a magical spectacle you have to see to believe.
A Unique Autumn Bloom
While most of
the world associates cherry blossoms with springtime, Meghalaya's are a rare exception. The species here, the Himalayan Wild Cherry or Prunus cerasoides, flowers in autumn, turning the 'Scotland of the East' into a pink-hued paradise from late October through November. The peak bloom often occurs in the first half of November, with thousands of trees lining roads, filling parks, and dotting hillsides in soft shades of pink and white. This unique seasonal timing makes a November trip to Shillong an extraordinary experience, different from any other blossom-viewing destination in the world.
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival
Coinciding with this natural wonder is the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, one of India’s most celebrated music and cultural events. For 2026, the festival is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. This year's event is themed the 'Year of Generations' and boasts an impressive international lineup, with millennial favourites like Nelly and Boys Like Girls headlining one day, and Gen Z icons Khalid and Swae Lee on the other. Beyond music, the festival is a vibrant showcase of Meghalayan culture, featuring food stalls with local Khasi delicacies like Jadoh, craft markets, art installations, and even a fashion competition with a significant cash prize. An International Music Summit will also be held on November 19th to connect local artists with global industry professionals.
Where to Find the Best Views
You don't need a festival ticket to enjoy the blossoms, as they are scattered across the city. Ward’s Lake is arguably the best and most accessible spot, where the pink flowers are beautifully reflected in the water. Other prime locations include the Shillong Golf Course, where the blossoms contrast with the green fairways and pine trees, and the roads around the Polo Grounds. For a different perspective, take a drive towards Upper Shillong or Shillong Peak; the roads are lined with cherry trees, and on a clear day, the peak offers a panoramic view of the city dotted in pink.
Perfect Weather for Exploring
November offers some of the best weather for travelling in Meghalaya. The monsoon rains have passed, leaving behind dry roads and clear, sunny skies. In Shillong, daytime temperatures are cool and pleasant, typically ranging from 12°C to 20°C, which is ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The excellent visibility means you can enjoy stunning, unobstructed views from famous viewpoints like Laitlum Canyons. This is also the perfect season to see the Umngot River in Dawki at its crystal-clear best or to tackle the trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge on drier, safer trails.
Planning Your November Trip
November is peak tourist season in Meghalaya, so planning ahead is crucial. Book flights and accommodation well in advance, especially if your trip coincides with the festival dates, as hotels in Shillong sell out quickly. To get there, you can fly to Shillong's Umroi Airport, or fly to Guwahati and take a cab for the scenic two-to-three hour drive to Shillong. When packing, think in layers. While days are comfortable, evenings and early mornings can be quite chilly, with temperatures dipping to around $8°C$. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring the city, festival grounds, and nearby natural attractions.
