A Global Phenomenon Explained
El Niño, which translates to "The Little Boy" in Spanish, is a natural climate pattern marked by the unusual warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. Although it originates thousands of kilometres away, its effects
are global. This oceanic warming disrupts atmospheric circulation patterns, influencing weather worldwide, from droughts in Australia to heavier rains in South America. For India, the primary concern is its historically strong connection to the southwest monsoon, which delivers about 70-80% of the country's annual rainfall. Forecasts from September 2026 indicate a strong El Niño event is strengthening and expected to persist into early 2027, making its potential impact a subject of close observation.
India's Monsoon Under Threat
The relationship between El Niño and the Indian monsoon is a critical one. Historically, El Niño years are often associated with weaker or below-normal monsoon rainfall. As of mid-September 2026, India is already facing a significant rainfall deficit of around 15% below the long-term average, putting the country on course for its driest monsoon in 17 years. This shortfall is directly linked to the strengthening El Niño conditions. While not every El Niño results in a drought in India, the correlation is strong enough to cause concern among experts and policymakers. A weak monsoon directly impacts the Kharif (summer) cropping season, which is heavily dependent on seasonal rains for sowing and crop growth.
The Ripple Effect on Crops and Prices
The consequences of a poor monsoon stretch from the farm to the marketplace. Rain-dependent crops are the most vulnerable, including staples like rice, pulses, maize, soybean, and cotton. The current dry spell is already threatening to reduce yields, with rice production potentially seeing its most significant drop in nearly two decades. Lower agricultural output not only impacts farmers' incomes but also tightens food supply, creating upward pressure on prices. This raises fears of renewed food inflation, which can strain household budgets across the country. Economists note that for every one percentage point shortfall in monsoon rainfall, food inflation can typically rise by about 25 basis points.
An Uneven Impact Across States
The impact of a deficient monsoon is not felt uniformly across India. States with lower irrigation coverage are particularly vulnerable. Regions like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan, where agriculture is more reliant on rainfall, face a higher risk to crops such as jowar, tur (pigeon pea), and soybean. Even for water-intensive crops like paddy, the impact depends on the geographic distribution of rainfall. A deficit in key rice-producing eastern and southern states can have an outsized impact on national production. This year, a significant portion of the country has experienced deficient rainfall, with analysis showing below-average soil moisture and drought conditions expanding in several states crucial for winter crops as well.
Are We Prepared for the Challenge?
While the threat is significant, India is not entirely defenseless. The government has reportedly adopted a hyper-vigilant approach, preparing contingency plans for hundreds of vulnerable districts. Measures include promoting the cultivation of drought-tolerant, short-duration crops like millets and pulses, enhancing water conservation efforts, and closely monitoring the situation. Furthermore, the country's resilience has improved over the decades. Substantial buffer stocks of key grains like rice and wheat provide a crucial cushion against immediate shortages and price volatility. The growing contribution of the Rabi (winter) crop season, which is less directly affected by the summer monsoon, also helps mitigate overall production losses.
