While we often blame the temperature, the primary disruptor of our sleep during the monsoon is the high humidity. Humidity is the amount of water vapour in the air, and when it's high, the air feels saturated and 'sticky'. For optimal sleep, experts suggest
an indoor humidity level between 30% and 50%. During the Indian monsoon, outdoor humidity can soar well above 70-80%, and indoor levels often follow suit, creating an uncomfortable environment for rest. This excessive moisture is what truly sets the stage for a restless night.
How Your Body's Thermostat Gets Jammed
Our bodies are designed with a sophisticated internal thermostat, a process called thermoregulation. To initiate and maintain sleep, your core body temperature needs to drop slightly. The body's main way of cooling down is by sweating. As sweat evaporates from your skin, it releases heat and lowers your body temperature. However, when the air is already laden with moisture, as it is during the monsoon, sweat cannot evaporate efficiently. Instead, it clings to the skin, making you feel clammy and preventing your body from cooling down. This forces your body to work harder to regulate its temperature, leading to physical stress that directly interferes with your ability to fall and stay asleep.
The Impact on Your Sleep Stages
This struggle for temperature control has a profound effect on the architecture of your sleep. Scientific studies show that high humidity increases wakefulness and reduces the time spent in the most restorative stages of sleep: slow-wave sleep (deep sleep) and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. High humidity is a breeding ground for allergens like mould and dust mites, which can thrive in mattresses and bedding. Additionally, while some find the sound of rain soothing, loud thunder and rattling windows can cause disturbances. How to Reclaim a Restful Night
While you can't change the weather, you can modify your environment. Using a dehumidifier is one of the most effective ways to control indoor humidity levels. If you have an air conditioner, running it will also help dry out the air. Opt for lightweight, breathable bedding made from natural fibres like cotton or bamboo, as they wick moisture away from the body. Wearing loose-fitting cotton sleepwear can also make a significant difference. Taking a cool shower before bed can help lower your core body temperature, making it easier to fall asleep. Finally, ensure good ventilation in your bedroom to prevent the air from becoming stagnant.
