What is the Amrit Bharat Express?
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new category of superfast passenger train designed for budget-conscious, long-distance travellers. Unlike premium, fully air-conditioned trains like the Vande Bharat Express, Amrit Bharat focuses on providing an upgraded
experience for non-AC sleeper and general class passengers. Launched in late 2023, these trains aim to connect cities over 800 kilometres apart, catering to migrant workers, families, and students travelling on high-density routes. The core idea is to offer faster travel times and better amenities than conventional mail or express trains without a significant price increase.
The Technology Behind the Speed
One of the standout features of the Amrit Bharat Express is its use of 'push-pull' technology. Each train has a locomotive at both the front and the back. This setup allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, which reduces overall journey time, especially on routes with multiple stops. These trains can reach a maximum speed of 130 km/h. Another major improvement is the use of semi-permanent couplers, which connect the coaches. This technology ensures a jerk-free experience when the train starts and stops, making the ride noticeably smoother for passengers.
Inside the Coaches: What to Expect
The interiors of Amrit Bharat trains are a significant upgrade from older non-AC coaches. Passengers will find more comfortable and better-cushioned seats and berths. Each seat is equipped with mobile charging sockets, including both USB Type-A and Type-C ports, along with mobile and bottle holders. The coaches feature modern, modular toilets with an electro-pneumatic flushing system, similar to those in airplanes, which are cleaner and more hygienic. For safety, the entire train is equipped with CCTV cameras and an aerosol-based fire suppression system. Radium-illuminated flooring strips improve visibility in the dark, and fully sealed gangways between coaches reduce noise and improve safety.
Booking Tickets and Fare Structure
Tickets for Amrit Bharat Express can be booked through the IRCTC website, mobile app, or at physical reservation counters. The advance reservation period (ARP) for these trains is typically 60 days. Fares are designed to be affordable and are about 15-17% higher than equivalent classes on regular mail or express trains. A key point to note is that Amrit Bharat trains do not have a Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) quota. This means passengers will either get a confirmed berth or remain on the waiting list. If a waitlisted e-ticket is not confirmed by the time the final chart is prepared, it is automatically cancelled, and a refund is processed.
Major Routes and Network
Since their launch, over 60 Amrit Bharat trains have been introduced across the Indian Railways network, with more being added regularly. These trains connect major cities across the country, enhancing connectivity between eastern, western, northern, and southern regions. Some of the initial and recently added routes include connections like Darbhanga to Anand Vihar (Delhi), Malda Town to SMVT Bengaluru, Gorakhpur to Delhi, Ahmedabad to Bhagalpur, and Dhanbad to Coimbatore. These routes are strategically chosen to serve high-demand corridors and reduce travel time for millions of passengers.
Tips for First-Time Travellers
For a comfortable journey, it's wise to book your tickets well in advance, especially during festive seasons. Since there is no pantry car for serving hot meals, it is advisable to either bring your own food or plan to buy meals at major stations en route. While the train offers many modern amenities, carrying essentials like a power bank, hand sanitiser, and toilet paper is always a good practice on long journeys.
