The Current Situation: High Alerts in Place
Reports of a dropped rain alert for the Konkan and Goa region are incorrect. In fact, the opposite is true. As of Thursday, June 25, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued high-level warnings, including red and orange alerts, for the entire
coastal belt. [14, 15] These alerts signify the potential for extremely heavy rainfall and advise residents and travellers to exercise a high degree of caution. [22] Forecasters are warning of rainfall exceeding 204 mm in some areas, creating a risk of urban flooding and significant travel disruptions. [14, 15] The monsoon, after a brief pause, has become active and is advancing with considerable intensity along the western coast. [21]
The Weekend Forecast: What to Actually Expect
The forecast for this weekend is wet and potentially disruptive. The IMD predicts fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Konkan and Goa through to June 30. [12, 19] Specifically, isolated heavy rainfall is expected on Friday, June 26. The intensity is forecast to increase significantly on Saturday, June 27, with warnings for "very heavy rainfall" at some locations. [16, 19] The wet spell will continue, with heavy rain alerts remaining in place for Sunday, June 28, and extending into the following week. [9, 16] These conditions will be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusty winds, with speeds potentially reaching 40-60 kmph. [9, 14]
Understanding the Monsoon's Advance
This intense weather is driven by the strengthening of the Southwest Monsoon, which is now advancing into remaining parts of Maharashtra and the central Arabian Sea. [7, 19] Favourable conditions, including multiple cyclonic circulations and trough systems, are supporting this widespread and heavy rain activity across India's western coast. [7] After a lull of about two weeks, the monsoon regained momentum around June 22, progressing towards Pune, Alibaug, and Mumbai, setting the stage for the heavy downpours currently forecast for the Konkan region and Goa. [6, 21]
Safety Advisory for Residents and Travellers
Given the active red and orange alerts, authorities are issuing strong safety advisories. The IMD has explicitly warned fishermen along the South Maharashtra-Goa coast to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions and high wind speeds. [6, 18] For those planning to travel by road, extreme caution is advised. Travellers on the Mumbai-Goa highway should anticipate significant delays, waterlogging, and the potential for landslides in vulnerable areas. [14] Residents in low-lying areas are urged to be vigilant for localized and flash flooding, which could disrupt transport and daily life. [6, 15] It is essential to stay updated with the latest official advisories from local disaster management agencies and the IMD. [13]
