Know Your Rights Under RBI Rules
The first layer of your defence is already built for you by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In 2021, the RBI introduced a framework for processing e-mandates on recurring payments that puts consumers in control. For any recurring charge, merchants and banks
must send you a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before the transaction. This message, sent via SMS or email, must clearly state the merchant's name, the amount, and the date of the charge. Crucially, it must also provide a way for you to opt-out or cancel the subscription. Furthermore, any recurring transaction above ₹15,000 requires your explicit approval via an Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA), like an OTP, for every payment. Understanding these rules is key; you have the right to be notified and the power to cancel before your money is debited.
Deploy Virtual Cards for Subscriptions
The single most powerful tool in your arsenal is the virtual card. A virtual card is a temporary, digitally generated card number, complete with its own CVV and expiry date, linked to your actual bank account or credit card. Most major banks and numerous fintech apps now offer them. The strategy is simple: generate a unique virtual card for every single subscription. When signing up for a service, use this virtual card instead of your primary one. You can set a specific spending limit on the virtual card, often just enough for one billing cycle. You can also set a short expiry date. This way, the merchant cannot charge you more than authorised, and the card becomes useless after it expires, automatically preventing future renewals. To stop a subscription, you don't have to chase the merchant's customer service; you can simply delete or freeze the virtual card.
Isolate Subscriptions on One Card
If managing multiple virtual cards feels too complex, an alternative is to dedicate one specific, low-limit credit card or a debit card for all your recurring payments. Choose a card that is not your primary one for daily expenses. By funnelling all subscriptions—from streaming services to software—through this single card, you create a centralised hub for all recurring debits. This makes tracking them much easier. At any point, you can review this card's statement and see every single active subscription in one place. It also contains the risk; if this card's details are compromised or overcharged, the damage is limited to its lower credit limit or the balance in the linked bank account, leaving your main accounts untouched.
Activate All Transaction Alerts
While the RBI mandates pre-debit notifications, don't rely on them alone. Go into your banking and credit card apps and activate every possible alert. Enable SMS and email notifications for all transactions, no matter how small. Set up alerts for international transactions if you subscribe to global services. Many banking apps, like HDFC's PayZapp, have sections specifically for managing bill payments and subscriptions, allowing you to track and get reminders. The goal is to create a system of 'loud money'. The more notifications you get about your spending, the less likely it is that an unwanted charge will slip through unnoticed. These alerts serve as a real-time audit of your accounts.
Conduct a Monthly Subscription Audit
A system is only as good as its maintenance. Set a recurring calendar reminder for a 'Subscription Audit' once a month. During this 30-minute session, your task is to review the statements for your dedicated subscription card or check your UPI AutoPay mandate section. UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm are required to show you a consolidated list of all your active AutoPay mandates. Go through the list and ask a simple question for each charge: 'Am I still getting value from this service?'. It's easy to let small, forgotten subscriptions stack up, a phenomenon sometimes called 'subscription creep'. A monthly review forces you to consciously approve each payment and cancel the ones that are no longer needed directly from the merchant's site or your UPI app.
