Abu Dhabi's Limited-Time Free Visa Offer
Abu Dhabi has rolled out a special promotion for Indian tourists, but it's essential to understand that this is not a blanket visa-free travel policy. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is covering the visa costs for a limited
time to boost tourism. This programme runs from August 1 to October 31, 2026, and is initially capped at 20,000 visas. To be eligible, you must be an Indian passport holder travelling from India. The visa cost is only covered when you book a package that includes a minimum stay of three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel and a return flight. Crucially, you cannot apply for this free visa independently through a government portal; it must be processed through participating travel agencies or online travel partners who handle the booking. This initiative effectively waives the visa fee, which is around Dh285, but is tied directly to booking a qualifying holiday package.
The Free 48-Hour Transit Visa
For travellers passing through the UAE, a 48-hour transit visa is available completely free of charge. This is an excellent option if you have a layover and wish to get a quick taste of what cities like Dubai or Abu Dhabi have to offer. To be eligible, you must be transiting through a UAE airport to a third destination, meaning your onward flight must be to a different country than the one you arrived from. You will need a confirmed onward ticket to apply. Applications for this visa are typically handled by the UAE-based airline you are flying with, such as Emirates or Etihad. You can often apply online through the airline's 'Manage your booking' portal after your flight is confirmed. This option is designed specifically for short layovers and cannot be extended.
Free Summer Visas for Children
Families travelling to the UAE during the summer can benefit from a significant cost-saving measure. The UAE government typically waives tourist visa fees for children under the age of 18 who are travelling with a paying adult parent. For 2026, this promotion is confirmed to run from July 15 to September 15. This is a fantastic opportunity for families planning their summer holidays, as every child under 18 will get their own individual visa at no cost, provided they are accompanied by a parent on a tourist visa. Outside of this specific promotional window, standard visa fees apply to all children, regardless of age. It’s a straightforward way to reduce the overall cost of a family vacation to the Emirates.
Understanding Visa on Arrival Options
While not entirely free, it's important to know about the visa-on-arrival facility available to certain Indian passport holders, as it simplifies the entry process. If you hold a valid visa or residence permit (Green Card) issued by the United States, United Kingdom, or an EU country, you may be eligible for a 14-day visa on arrival. This visa does come with a fee, but it eliminates the need for pre-application. The key requirement is that your passport and your foreign visa or residence permit must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival in the UAE. This is a separate provision from the promotional free visa offers and applies year-round.
Key Steps and Documents Required
Whether applying for a free transit visa or having a travel partner process your Abu Dhabi promotional visa, some documents are universally required. You will always need a passport with at least six months of validity from your date of travel. A scanned colour copy of your passport's first and last pages, along with a recent passport-sized photograph against a white background, is also standard. For any transit or tourist visa, proof of a confirmed return or onward flight ticket is mandatory. When applying through an airline or travel agency, the process is streamlined, but ensuring your documents are clear and meet the specifications is crucial to avoid delays or rejection. Always apply well in advance of your travel dates.
