Our Skewed Picture of Pets
For decades, the science of human-animal interaction—the field of anthrozoology—has had a significant blind spot. Much of the research has been dominated by studies on a very specific kind of animal and owner: the household pet in a Western, Educated,
Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) society. This has created a scientific baseline where a dog is a pampered family member who sleeps in the bed and a cat is an indoor companion. While this is true for many, it is far from the only way humans and animals coexist. This narrow focus has limited our understanding, creating theories about pet ownership, attachment, and its benefits that were not necessarily universal. Many foundational ideas about why we keep pets and what they do for us were based on a small, culturally specific slice of the global population.
Going Global for a Fuller Story
Recognizing this limitation, researchers are now expanding their work across the globe. They are asking crucial questions: What does a “pet” even mean in different cultures? How do relationships with animals function in societies where dogs might be free-roaming community members rather than private property, or where livestock holds sacred value? This push for diversity in research is vital. Studies are now looking at human-animal dynamics in places from Iran to Japan and across various societies in Africa and South America. One study, for instance, used data from 60 different societies to explore the functions and treatment of pets, finding that the common Western view of pets as emotional surrogates is not a universal truth. This global approach provides a much-needed reality check on long-held beliefs.
What a Wider Lens Reveals
This new wave of research is yielding fascinating insights. For example, some cross-cultural studies suggest that practices common in modern Western societies, like letting animals sleep in our beds and treating them as full family members, are actually cultural anomalies. The function of an animal is a strong predictor of how it is treated. In societies where dogs are used for hunting, they are more likely to be given names and treated as part of the family, challenging the simple pet-versus-tool dichotomy. Furthermore, the perceived benefits of pet ownership, such as reduced loneliness and stress, are being re-examined to see if they hold true across different living conditions and social structures. Research shows that while the human-animal bond is a global phenomenon, its expression is incredibly diverse.
The Indian Context
India provides a perfect example of the complexity that Western-centric research often misses. The relationship with animals here is deeply layered. Cows, for instance, are not just livestock but hold a sacred status in Hinduism, roaming freely in cities and cared for by the community. The concept of the “community dog” or “indie” is also distinct. These animals live alongside humans, neither fully wild nor exclusively owned, and are supported by a network of neighbourhood caregivers. This model of shared responsibility and coexistence challenges the nuclear-family pet ownership model that dominates Western research. Understanding these unique dynamics is crucial for developing locally relevant animal welfare policies and for appreciating the diverse ways humans and animals have built shared lives.
Toward a More Honest Science
Making pet science more representative is not just an academic exercise. It has real-world implications. A more inclusive understanding allows for better public policy on animal welfare, more effective conservation efforts that involve local communities, and a more nuanced view of the psychological benefits of animals. By moving beyond a one-size-fits-all model, researchers can identify which benefits of human-animal interaction are truly universal and which are shaped by culture. This work helps to decolonize science, acknowledging that valuable knowledge and practices exist all over the world. It replaces a narrow, monolithic story with a vibrant mosaic of relationships, reflecting the true diversity of life on Earth.
