Heat stress on the human body is cumulative. During the day, our bodies work hard to stay cool. Night-time is when we are supposed to recover, allowing our core temperature to drop and our cardiovascular system to rest. When overnight temperatures remain
high, the body doesn't get this crucial break. This lack of recovery can lead to a range of health issues, from poor sleep to more severe conditions like heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Studies show that hot nights following hot days pose a greater mortality risk than hot days followed by cool nights, making overnight temperatures a critical factor in public health.
Why Our Nights Are Staying Warmer
The primary culprit is the 'urban heat island' effect. Cities, with their dense concentrations of concrete buildings, roads, and other dark surfaces, absorb and retain the sun's heat throughout the day. After sunset, these materials slowly release that stored heat back into the air, keeping night-time temperatures artificially high. This effect is often more pronounced at night than during the day, with urban areas sometimes staying significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas. A lack of green spaces like parks and trees, which provide shade and cooling through evaporation, exacerbates the problem in many Indian cities.
The Strain on Your Body
Constant heat puts immense strain on the body, particularly the heart. When you can't cool down at night, your heart has to keep working overtime to pump blood to the skin to dissipate heat. This prolonged stress can be especially dangerous for those with pre-existing conditions. Research has specifically linked high night-time temperatures to an increased risk of stroke. Beyond cardiovascular issues, warm nights disrupt the deep, restorative phases of sleep, which are essential for physical and mental recovery, leaving you tired and less resilient to the next day's heat.
Who Is Most Vulnerable?
While everyone is affected, some groups are at much higher risk. This includes the elderly, whose bodies may not regulate temperature as efficiently, and young children. People with chronic health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses are also particularly susceptible. Additionally, those in low-income households may be more exposed due to a lack of access to air conditioning or living in poorly ventilated homes made from heat-retaining materials. Outdoor workers who endure heat all day are also at high risk if they cannot adequately cool down at night.
How to Stay Safer on Warm Nights
Keeping your home cool during the day is the first step. Close windows and blinds during the hottest hours to block sunlight. At night, if the outside air is cooler, create cross-ventilation by opening windows on opposite sides of your home. Taking a lukewarm shower before bed can help lower your core body temperature. Opt for lightweight, breathable cotton or linen bedding and sleepwear. Staying hydrated is crucial, so drink water throughout the day but avoid excessive amounts right before bed. You can also place cool, wet cloths on your forehead or pulse points like your wrists and ankles to help your body cool down faster.
