The Official Rule: How Much is Enough?
For years, Thai immigration law has included a clause requiring tourists to prove they have sufficient funds for their stay. Recently, and particularly for Indian travellers, enforcement of this rule has become more frequent. Following the end of a visa-free
scheme, the Embassy of India in Bangkok issued an advisory in early July 2026, reminding nationals of the requirements. Officially, travellers entering on a Visa on Arrival or under a visa waiver program may be asked to show 20,000 Thai Baht per person (approximately ₹58,000). For those travelling as a family, the requirement is 40,000 THB. While this rule has always existed, recent advisories from official channels suggest a renewed focus on enforcement at border checkpoints. Immigration officials have the discretion to conduct these checks randomly.
Cash is King: What Proof is Accepted?
The primary point of confusion for many travellers is what constitutes acceptable 'proof'. Embassy advisories and official statements have specifically emphasized carrying cash. While some immigration officers may accept other forms of proof at their discretion, relying solely on digital money is a risk. Credit cards or mobile banking app balances are not officially guaranteed substitutes for the required funds. The safest and most reliable option is to carry the required amount in physical currency. This can be in Thai Baht or an equivalent amount in other major convertible currencies like US Dollars or Euros. Travellers should not assume that a high credit card limit will be accepted as evidence, as the focus of the checks has been on accessible cash.
Why the Renewed Enforcement?
The tightening of these checks is not arbitrary. Thai authorities have stated the measures are part of standard procedure to ensure visitors can financially support themselves during their stay and to maintain national security. The reminders come as part of a broader shift in immigration policy, which has also seen changes to visa-free stay durations. The enforcement aims to ensure visitors are genuine tourists and to curb issues like illegal employment or overstaying. The Indian Embassy, in its recent advisory, specifically cautioned against attempting to find work on a tourist visa. The checks are a way for immigration to verify that the purpose of a visit aligns with the type of visa or entry permit used.
Your Pre-Travel Financial Checklist
To avoid any issues at immigration, a little preparation goes a long way. First, ensure you have the required cash amount: 20,000 THB per individual or 40,000 THB per family. It is wise to carry this in a major, easily convertible currency. Second, do not rely on a single form of financial proof. While cash is recommended, having a recent bank statement as a backup can be helpful, though not a guaranteed replacement. Third, remember this is just one part of your documentation. Officials will also check for a passport with at least six months' validity, a confirmed return ticket, proof of accommodation, and a completed Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC). Having all documents organized and ready can lead to a smoother, faster process.
