Navigating the Visa Rules
The visa situation for Indian travellers has seen some changes. A visa-free entry scheme that was previously in place has ended as of early July 2026. This means Indian passport holders must now secure the correct travel authorisation before their trip.
Most travellers will opt for a Visa on Arrival (VoA), which is typically valid for a 15-day stay. For those planning a longer vacation, applying for a 60-day tourist e-Visa in advance is the better option. Regardless of the type, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of entry. The Indian Embassy in Bangkok has advised all nationals to verify the specific requirements before departure to ensure a hassle-free entry.
The Proof of Funds Requirement
One of the most discussed requirements is the need to show proof of sufficient funds. Thai immigration authorities may ask tourists to show they have enough cash to support themselves during their stay. For travellers using the Visa on Arrival facility, the specified amount is at least 20,000 Thai Baht (approximately ₹58,000) per person. Some sources state the requirement for a VoA is 10,000 THB per person and 20,000 THB for a family, while a tourist visa requires 20,000 THB per person and 40,000 THB per family. This check is not performed on every traveller, but it is carried out randomly at the discretion of the immigration officer. It is important to note that this proof must be in cash, as credit cards or bank statements may not be accepted for this specific on-the-spot check. The rule itself is a long-standing part of Thailand's immigration law, intended to ensure visitors can fund their trip.
Understanding the Arrival Card
The traditional paper-based TM6 arrival/departure card has been phased out. All foreign travellers are now required to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online. This must be done within 72 hours before your arrival in the country. After submitting the form online, you will receive a QR code. It is essential to save this code on your phone or have a printed copy ready to present at the immigration counter. The TDAC is required for every entry into Thailand, regardless of your visa type. This digital system is designed to streamline the immigration process and enhance security.
Your Smooth Entry Checklist
To avoid any stress at the airport, it’s best to have all your documents organised and ready for inspection. The Embassy of India in Bangkok has outlined a clear checklist for travellers. Ensure you have your passport with at least six months' validity, a confirmed return or onward flight ticket, and proof of your accommodation, such as hotel booking confirmations. Keep the required amount of cash (at least 20,000 THB) accessible. Finally, have your TDAC QR code saved and ready to be scanned. Being prepared with these documents allows immigration officers to process your entry efficiently, letting you begin your Thai adventure without delay.
