A Major Boost in Speed and Power
The most significant upgrade to the IRCTC platform is its sheer capacity. The previous system often buckled under pressure, especially during festival seasons and the daily Tatkal rush. The new infrastructure is built to handle over 1.5 lakh bookings
per minute, a massive increase from the previous limit of about 32,000. In parallel, the backend Passenger Reservation System (PRS) can now manage over 40 lakh inquiries per minute, up from 4 lakh. For the average person, this translates to fewer website crashes, faster page loading, and a much lower chance of getting timed out just before confirming a ticket. The changes were prompted in part by direct feedback from students to the Union Railway Minister about the difficulties of using the site.
A Cleaner, Less Distracting Interface
One of the most welcome changes is a simplified user interface. The redesigned website does away with many of the elements that previously slowed down the booking process. This includes a reduction in unnecessary pop-ups, flashing advertisements, and, most importantly, repeated CAPTCHA verifications that often appeared at the worst possible moments. By creating a clutter-free environment, the new design helps users navigate from searching for a train to making a payment with fewer interruptions. The goal is to make the booking journey more intuitive and less stressful, allowing you to focus on securing your seat without distraction.
Smarter Booking and Planning Features
Beyond speed, the new website introduces several smart features designed to give passengers more control and information. A new fare calendar allows users to compare ticket prices across different dates, helping those with flexible travel plans find the most affordable options. Another key addition is the ability to specify preferred seats during the booking process, much like booking a seat in a movie theatre. Furthermore, the updated site displays seat availability across all classes—Sleeper, 3AC, 2AC, etc.—on a single screen. This eliminates the old, time-consuming process of checking each class one by one.
Easier for Everyone to Use
The platform has also been updated to be more inclusive. The website will now support multiple Indian languages, making it more accessible to people across the country who may not be comfortable with English. Additionally, the new system integrates services for Divyangjan, students, and patients onto a single platform. This consolidates the process for concession bookings, which previously required navigating separate channels, making it simpler for those who rely on these special facilities. Regular travelers will also appreciate the ability to save passenger details to their profiles, which helps speed up future bookings significantly.
