The Airline Policy Maze
Flying with a pet in India is possible, but it is far from simple. India's aviation regulator, the DGCA, allows individual airlines to set their own rules for transporting pets, leading to a confusing patchwork of policies. For instance, while Air India and
Akasa Air may allow small pets in the cabin, others like IndiGo and SpiceJet restrict them to the cargo hold. The weight limits for in-cabin travel also vary, with one airline capping it at 7kg (pet plus carrier) and another at 10kg. This inconsistency forces pet parents to start their travel planning not with destinations, but with a deep dive into the fine print of each carrier's website. The booking process itself can be a challenge, as it often cannot be done online and requires calling customer service well in advance, as only one or two pets are typically allowed in the cabin per flight. Furthermore, airlines have strict rules about IATA-approved crates, up-to-date health and vaccination certificates, and may even refuse to fly pets in extreme weather conditions.
Decoding 'Pet-Friendly' Hotels
The term 'pet-friendly' in the hotel industry is frustratingly vague. For one hotel, it might mean your pet is welcomed with a special bed and a gourmet menu. For another, it could mean your pet is merely tolerated, confined to your room, and comes with a hefty daily cleaning fee. Many establishments have rules that are difficult to follow, such as barring pets from all public areas including lobbies and outdoor spaces, which complicates even simple tasks like entering and exiting the building. There are often unstated size or breed restrictions, and a surprising number of 'pet-friendly' rooms are also designated smoking rooms. A truly welcoming hotel goes beyond just allowing an animal on the premises. They provide useful amenities like waste disposal bags, information on local vets and walking routes, and have staff who are trained to interact with animal guests. The difference is between being treated as a welcome guest versus a potential liability, and this ambiguity makes booking accommodation a gamble.
What Clear Policies Should Look Like
So, what does clarity look like? For airlines, it would mean a dedicated, easy-to-find section on their website detailing all pet-related rules. This should include clear information on in-cabin versus cargo options, exact weight and crate size specifications, a transparent and flat fee structure, and any breed restrictions. The ability to add a pet to a booking online, just like adding extra baggage, would be a significant step forward. For hotels, clarity begins with honesty. Instead of a simple 'pet-friendly' label, they should provide a detailed policy outlining any extra fees (and whether they are per-stay or per-night), weight or number-of-pet limits, and a clear map of where pets are and are not allowed on the property. Listing amenities such as designated relief areas, water bowls, or pet-sitting services would help owners make informed choices. Ultimately, both industries need to shift from a position of tolerance to one of genuine welcome, treating pet parents as a valuable customer segment.
A Pre-Travel Checklist for Pet Parents
Until the industry standardises, the burden of ensuring a smooth journey falls on the pet owner. First, always call ahead. Do not rely solely on website information. Speak directly to the airline and hotel to confirm their policy and book your pet's spot. For flights, do this weeks in advance. Second, get your paperwork in order. This includes a health certificate from your vet issued within 48-72 hours of travel, and up-to-date vaccination records, especially for rabies. Third, prepare your pet. Ensure they are comfortable in their IATA-approved travel crate long before the day of the journey. Do not sedate your pet unless specifically advised by a vet, as it can be dangerous during flight. Finally, on travel day, arrive at the airport extra early for document checks. Have digital and physical copies of all documents. By being overly prepared, you can navigate the current confusing system with greater confidence and ensure a safer, less stressful trip for your beloved companion.
