First Steps: Visas and When to Go
Before you book anything, get your documents and timing right. For Indian passport holders, the visa process for both countries is refreshingly straightforward. Vietnam requires a visa, and the 90-day e-visa is the most convenient option for tourists.
You can apply online through the official government portal, and it's best to do this at least two weeks before your trip. Cambodia is even simpler, offering a visa on arrival at major airports and land borders, or you can get an e-visa beforehand to save time. The best time to visit both countries is during the dry season, from November to April. This period offers pleasant weather with lower humidity and minimal rain, which is ideal for exploring temples and enjoying the outdoors. However, this is also peak season, so expect more crowds and book flights and hotels in advance.
Crafting Your Itinerary
A typical route for a combined trip is to travel overland from south Vietnam into Cambodia. Many travellers fly into Ho Chi Minh City, explore the Mekong Delta, and then travel to Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. From there, you can head to Siem Reap to see the incredible Angkor Wat temple complex. Alternatively, start in northern Vietnam in the capital, Hanoi, and travel south through the country before crossing into Cambodia. Vietnam's long, narrow shape makes a north-to-south (or vice-versa) journey logical. Allow at least two weeks to get a good feel for both countries without rushing. A popular itinerary might include Hanoi and Ha Long Bay in the north, Hoi An in the center, and Ho Chi Minh City in the south of Vietnam, followed by Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in Cambodia.
Booking Flights: Getting There and Around
For Indian travellers, direct flights to Vietnam have become increasingly common, with carriers like VietJet Air, IndiGo, Vietnam Airlines, and Air India connecting major cities like Delhi and Mumbai with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. To get the best prices, book several months in advance and consider travelling during the shoulder seasons (May-June and Oct-Nov) when fares may be lower. To travel between Vietnam and Cambodia, you have several options. The fastest way is a short flight from Ho Chi Minh City to either Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. For a more scenic and budget-friendly journey, consider taking a bus. The route from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh is well-serviced by comfortable buses and takes about six hours, including the border crossing. There are also boat services available through the Mekong Delta, offering a unique travel experience.
Finding Your Stay: Hotels for Every Budget
Both Vietnam and Cambodia offer a vast range of accommodation to suit every budget. You'll find everything from affordable hostels and family-run guesthouses to stylish boutique hotels and luxurious international resorts. Booking platforms are your best friend here. It's wise to book your first few nights' accommodation in advance, especially if you're arriving late at night. In major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phnom Penh, staying in or near the city center will give you easy access to attractions, restaurants, and transport. In places like Hoi An and Siem Reap, you might find charming hotels slightly outside the main tourist hub that offer a more relaxed atmosphere.
Must-See Sights and Experiences
While it's impossible to see everything, some sights are essential. In Vietnam, don't miss an overnight cruise on the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay, wandering the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An's Ancient Town, and exploring the vibrant chaos of Ho Chi Minh City. A visit to the War Remnants Museum provides a poignant look into the country's history. In Cambodia, the main draw is the magnificent Angkor Wat, a sprawling temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage site near Siem Reap. Plan to spend at least two to three days exploring these ancient ruins. In the capital, Phnom Penh, the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda are highlights, while the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Choeung Ek Killing Fields offer a sobering but important history lesson.
