The most immediate change AI will bring is the ability to make payments simply by speaking. Instead of navigating app menus, you will be able to instruct your phone with voice commands like, "Pay the grocery bill of 1500 rupees" or "Send 500 rupees to Mom."
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) are actively developing this feature, which will use AI to understand and execute your spoken requests securely. This technology aims to dramatically enhance ease of use, with initial support for Hindi and English, and plans to include more Indian languages. This move is expected to deepen financial inclusion, making digital payments accessible to those who are not comfortable with text-based interfaces. Some platforms are already deploying AI-powered, voice-first helplines to guide users through UPI setup and answer queries in multiple languages.
Your Personal Shopping Assistant: Agentic AI
The next frontier is 'agentic AI,' where software agents don't just take commands but act on your behalf based on pre-set rules. Imagine an AI agent that automatically pays for your weekly groceries from a specific store, as long as the bill is within your set budget. NPCI is developing a framework called the Unified Agent Protocol (UAP) to enable this. Users will be able to grant limited authority to an AI agent, defining how much it can spend and for what purpose, without needing to approve every single transaction. This could extend to more sophisticated tasks, like automatically purchasing an item when it goes on sale or even making investments when a price threshold is met. The system is expected to build on existing UPI features like 'UPI Circle' for delegating authority and 'Reserve Pay' for blocking funds for future debits.
Smarter Defences Against Evolving Fraud
While AI offers new conveniences, it also presents new security challenges, as fraudsters use it to create more sophisticated phishing and voice-cloning scams. However, the same technology is being deployed to build a stronger defence. AI and machine learning algorithms can analyze billions of transactions in real-time to detect anomalies that signal fraud. These systems can identify suspicious patterns, like a transaction in one city followed by another hundreds of kilometres away just minutes later, and block them before they are completed. By analyzing behavioural data—such as typing rhythm, location, and historical spending—AI can spot irregularities that rule-based systems might miss, providing a dynamic shield against emerging threats. NPCI has highlighted that using AI effectively for fraud detection is a top priority for securing the next wave of UPI growth.
Credit for Everyone: AI-Powered Lending
One of the most significant impacts of AI on UPI will be in the world of credit. For millions of people without a traditional credit history, securing a loan is a major hurdle. AI can change this by analyzing an individual's UPI transaction data—their spending habits, payment frequency, and income flow—to generate a behavioural credit score. This allows lenders to assess the creditworthiness of 'thin-file' customers and offer them small, pre-sanctioned credit lines directly through UPI. This concept, often called 'Credit Line on UPI', facilitates the disbursal of low-ticket, high-volume retail loans, which can boost financial inclusion and economic activity. It transforms a user's digital payment footprint into a key for accessing credit, a service previously out of reach for many.
