Make Your Goal Concrete
A vague goal like “I want to save money” is hard to act on. Instead, make it specific and time-bound. Decide if you want to save ₹1 lakh in 10 months, 12 months, or 18 months. Breaking it down makes it manageable. For example, saving ₹1 lakh in 12 months means
putting aside about ₹8,400 each month. If that feels like too much, extend your timeline. The key is to have a clear monthly target that you can work towards, turning a wish into a concrete plan.
Adopt the 50/30/20 Rule
This popular budgeting framework is a great starting point for managing your take-home salary. Allocate 50% of your income to 'Needs'—essential expenses like rent, utilities, groceries, and transport. Use 30% for 'Wants', which includes lifestyle spending like dining out, entertainment, and shopping. The final 20% is non-negotiable: it goes directly into 'Savings'. This 20% is your dedicated fund for reaching that ₹1 lakh goal. Think of it as the minimum, not the maximum. If you can, try to push your savings rate higher by trimming your 'Wants'.
Pay Yourself First, Automatically
Don't wait until the end of the month to see what's left to save. Treat your savings like a mandatory bill. The most effective way to do this is to 'pay yourself first'. As soon as your salary is credited, set up an automatic transfer to move your savings portion (that 20% or more) into a separate account. This simple act of automation ensures you save consistently before you get a chance to spend the money. Keeping your savings in a separate account also makes you less likely to dip into it for casual expenses.
Track Every Rupee
In the age of UPI and one-tap payments, it’s easy to lose track of where your money is going. To get control, you need data. Start by tracking all your expenses for a month, from your morning chai to your streaming subscriptions. Use a simple notebook or a budgeting app to see your spending patterns clearly. You’ll likely be surprised by how much small, impulsive purchases add up. Once you know where your money is going, you can identify areas to cut back without feeling deprived.
Choose the Right Savings Account
Where you keep your growing fund matters. Don't just let it sit in your primary spending account. Open a separate high-yield savings account that offers a better interest rate than a standard account. Some banks offer digital, zero-balance accounts that are perfect for this purpose. Another disciplined option is a Recurring Deposit (RD), where a fixed amount is debited from your account each month for a set tenure, often earning a higher interest rate than a regular savings account. This adds another layer of commitment to your goal.
Fight Lifestyle Creep
As your career progresses and your income grows, there's a natural temptation to upgrade your lifestyle. This is known as 'lifestyle creep', where your spending increases in lockstep with your earnings, leaving you with little extra to save. Before making a big purchase or committing to a new monthly expense, ask yourself if it's a genuine need or just an upgraded want. Funneling a portion of every salary hike directly into your savings is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your journey to ₹1 lakh and beyond.
