The Previous Digital Divide
For years, a crucial safety net was available almost exclusively to those comfortable with technology. Passengers booking their train tickets online through the IRCTC website or mobile app could easily opt for travel insurance with a single click for a nominal
fee. This left out a massive segment of the population—those who rely on the vast network of railway reservation counters across the country. Whether due to a lack of digital literacy, limited internet access, or simply personal preference, millions who purchased physical tickets were unable to access this valuable insurance coverage, creating a clear gap in passenger security.
A Welcome Change for All Passengers
Indian Railways has now addressed this gap by making the optional travel insurance scheme available to all passengers, including those who buy reserved or even unreserved tickets from station counters. This decision ensures that every passenger, regardless of their booking method, has the opportunity to secure their journey. The move is a recognition that safety and financial protection should be universal and not dependent on one's ability to navigate a website. By filling a simple form at the counter, anyone can now add this layer of security to their travel plans for a remarkably low cost.
What the Insurance Policy Covers
For a premium of just 35 paise per passenger, the insurance policy offers substantial financial coverage in the event of a train accident or other untoward incidents during the journey. The benefits are comprehensive and designed to provide relief during a crisis. The policy provides ₹10 lakh in case of death or permanent total disability. For permanent partial disability, the coverage is up to ₹7.5 lakh. Additionally, it includes up to ₹2 lakh for hospitalization expenses for injuries sustained and ₹10,000 for the transportation of mortal remains in the unfortunate event of a passenger's death. This robust coverage provides a significant financial cushion for passengers and their families.
How to Opt-In at the Counter
The process to avail this insurance at the ticket counter has been kept straightforward. When filling out the reservation slip for your ticket, you will now have the option to opt-in for travel insurance. Passengers will need to indicate their choice on the form and provide necessary details like a mobile number. This ensures that the policy can be issued and the details can be sent to the passenger. The premium of 35 paise is automatically added to the total ticket fare. This simple, integrated process removes any complex extra steps, making it accessible for everyone standing in the queue.
Why This Parity Matters
This initiative is more than just an operational update; it's a step towards greater equity. It acknowledges the diverse reality of India, where millions still depend on traditional, over-the-counter services. By extending insurance to physical ticket holders, Indian Railways is reinforcing its commitment to the safety of all its passengers. It provides peace of mind, especially for families in rural or semi-urban areas who may not have other forms of financial protection. This move democratises safety, ensuring that a simple, affordable insurance cover is not a privilege for the digitally savvy but a choice available to every single person who steps onto an Indian train.
