Every year, headlines track the southwest monsoon's progress, often boiling it down to a single number: the percentage of rainfall compared to the Long Period Average (LPA). As of mid-August 2026, the all-India rainfall deficit stood at 12%, a figure
that might not sound alarming. However, this national average masks a far more complex and concerning reality. While some regions have received intense showers, even leading to floods, vast agricultural belts are experiencing drought-like conditions. This disparity is the heart of the problem. For Kharif crops like rice, maize, and soybean, which are planted during the monsoon, a healthy national average means little if the rain doesn't fall in the right places at the right time. One or two days of heavy rain cannot compensate for weeks of dryness that parch the soil and stress the crops.
The 2026 Picture: A Tale of Two Monsoons
The current season is a textbook case of this unevenness. As of mid-August, crucial agricultural states are facing significant shortfalls. East and northeast India have a rainfall deficit of 27%. Key states like Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab are down by over 30%, while Karnataka and Kerala are also lagging. The impact is stark: IMD data shows that 40 of India's top 50 rice-producing districts are running rainfall deficits. The situation is similar for other key crops, with a majority of top soybean and maize districts also facing a lack of rain. Meanwhile, a low-pressure area is causing extremely heavy rainfall in Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal. This geographical mismatch—too much water in some areas, not enough in the primary grain baskets—threatens both sowing and yield. As of August 14, total Kharif sowing was about 2% lower than last year, with rice, maize, and soybean acreage all declining.
Timing is Everything for Crops
The timing of rainfall is just as important as its location. The Kharif season has critical growth stages, and a lack of moisture at the wrong time can be devastating. After sowing is complete, crops enter a vegetative growth phase where they need consistent moisture to thrive. Many of India's Kharif crops, including soybean and paddy, are currently in this delicate stage. Experts warn that prolonged dry spells in late August can severely impact flowering, pod formation, and grain filling, which ultimately determine the final yield. A pattern of brief, intense rain followed by a long dry spell is particularly damaging. The soil gets momentary relief but dries out quickly, leaving the crop's roots stressed. Scientists note that up to 64% of India's agricultural area was experiencing drought stress as of early August, highlighting the gap between rainfall and the soil moisture actually available to plants.
The Ripple Effect on the Economy
The consequences of a poorly distributed monsoon extend far beyond the farm gate. Agriculture is a cornerstone of the Indian economy, and the Kharif season is its most significant contributor. Poor yields can lead to lower farm incomes, which in turn dampens rural demand for everything from tractors to consumer goods. This has a direct impact on numerous industries and overall GDP growth. Furthermore, a shortfall in the production of essential staples like rice and pulses can fuel food inflation, affecting household budgets across the country. The government often has to step in with measures like releasing stocks, importing goods, or providing financial relief to farmers, all of which strain public finances. The stress on water resources also has a cascading effect, as farmers may increase groundwater pumping to save their Kharif crops, depleting reserves needed for the subsequent Rabi (winter) season.
