of stress to the journey. Now, Indian Railways has introduced a digital solution to streamline this experience. Launched on July 31, 2026, the online excess luggage booking facility allows travellers with confirmed tickets to declare and pay for their extra bags from the comfort of their homes. This move is aimed at reducing crowds at stations, increasing transparency, and making train travel more convenient for everyone.
Know Your Free Luggage Allowance
Before you book, it's crucial to understand how much you can carry for free. The allowance varies significantly by travel class. Passengers in AC First Class enjoy a generous 70 kg free allowance. Those in AC 2-Tier and First Class can carry up to 50 kg for free. For Sleeper Class, the free limit is 40 kg, and for Second Class, it is 35 kg. It is important to note that for passengers in AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, the free allowance of 40 kg is also the maximum limit, meaning they are not eligible to book excess luggage for these classes.
How to Book Excess Luggage Online
The new process is designed to be straightforward. Passengers with a confirmed ticket can visit the official Indian Railways parcel portal at www.parcel.indianrail.gov.in. After registering and logging in, you will need to enter your journey details, including your PNR. The system allows you to fill out a digital forwarding note with details about your luggage. Based on the weight and distance, an estimated cost is displayed. While the booking can be initiated online, the process requires a final step at the station: you must present a printout of the online form at the parcel office, where the luggage is officially weighed and final charges are paid. You then receive a Railway Receipt (RR), which is needed to collect your luggage at the destination.
Understanding the Costs and Penalties
Booking your excess luggage in advance is not just convenient; it's also more economical. The charge for pre-booked excess luggage is calculated at 1.5 times the normal luggage tariff. The minimum charge is ₹30. However, if you are caught with un-booked excess luggage during your journey, the penalty can be severe—up to six times the standard rate. This new system encourages passengers to be proactive and declare their luggage properly, ensuring they pay the standard excess fee rather than a steep penalty.

The primary advantage of this new system is the significant reduction in hassle. By starting the process online, you minimise time spent in queues at the parcel office. It provides clear, upfront information on charges and rules, allowing for better budget planning. What You Should Keep in Mind
While the online booking system is a major step forward, some limitations remain. The service is only for passengers holding confirmed reserved tickets and is not available for AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car travellers. Furthermore, travellers must adhere to specific luggage dimensions. For most classes, bags should not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm. For AC 3-Tier and Chair Car, a smaller size of 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm applies. Very large or commercial goods may still require booking through the traditional parcel office system.
