Looking for a quick escape from Pune's urban hustle? The Sahyadri hills cradle stunning reservoirs that offer the perfect blend of tranquillity and adventure. Two standout destinations for a refreshing dam-side trip are Mulshi and Panshet.
Why a Dam-Side Getaway?
There is a unique
magic to the large water bodies created by dams, especially during and after the monsoon season. The drive to these locations is often as rewarding as the destination itself, with roads winding through lush green landscapes, past seasonal waterfalls and misty valleys. For residents of Pune, these lakeside spots offer an accessible and refreshing break from city life, perfect for a day trip or a relaxing weekend. They combine scenic beauty with opportunities for recreation, making them ideal for families, couples, and solo travellers alike.
Mulshi: A Haven of Serenity
Located about 45-50 kilometres from Pune, Mulshi Dam, built on the Mula River, is synonymous with scenic beauty and calm. The drive to Mulshi is celebrated for its picturesque quality, taking you through verdant hills and paddy fields that set a peaceful tone for the trip. The area around Mulshi Lake is ideal for unhurried pastimes; you can find a quiet spot for a picnic, try your hand at boating, or simply relax by the water's edge. It's a favourite for photographers and bird-watchers, who are drawn to the calm waters and rich local flora and fauna. While it’s a year-round destination, Mulshi truly comes alive during the monsoon (June to September) when the landscape is at its greenest and waterfalls cascade down the hillsides. For those looking to extend their stay, numerous resorts and lakeside cottages offer comfortable accommodation.
Panshet: The Adventurer’s Choice
Also known as Tanajisagar Dam, Panshet is situated around 50 kilometres southwest of Pune on the Ambi River. While it also boasts stunning natural beauty, Panshet has carved a niche for itself as a hub for water sports. Adventure enthusiasts flock here for activities like kayaking, speed boating, banana boat rides, and jet skiing. The surrounding hills provide ample opportunities for trekking, with trails leading to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the reservoir. The area is a fantastic spot for a family picnic or a fun day out with friends. Like Mulshi, Panshet is part of a cluster of dams, with Varasgaon Dam located very close by, offering another spot for quiet relaxation. For a dose of history, the famous Sinhagad Fort is also a popular detour from Panshet.
Planning Your Trip
Both Mulshi and Panshet are easily accessible by road from Pune, with the journey taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The best time to visit for lush greenery and waterfalls is the monsoon and postmonsoon period, from July to February. However, the winter months from October to February offer pleasant weather ideal for outdoor activities and camping. When visiting, especially during the monsoon, be prepared for slippery roads and trails, so comfortable footwear with good grip is advisable. While basic eateries serving local Maharashtrian fare like vada pav and misal are available, packing your own snacks and water is a good idea. If you plan to indulge in water sports at Panshet, prices start from around INR 500.
