Choose the Right Credit Card
The foundation of any travel rewards strategy is the right credit card. In India, these broadly fall into two categories: co-branded airline cards and general travel cards. Co-branded cards, like the Axis Bank Vistara or Air India SBI cards, directly
earn you points (or miles) for a specific airline's loyalty program. For every eligible Rs. 200 spent, you might earn a set number of Club Vistara or Maharaja Points. These are great if you are loyal to one airline. General travel cards, such as the Axis Atlas or HDFC Diners Club Black, offer more flexibility. They accumulate bank-specific reward points which can then be transferred to multiple airline partners, often at favorable ratios. This allows you to shop around for the best flight redemption options across different carriers. When choosing, look at the welcome bonus, annual fees, reward earning rate, and which spending categories offer accelerated points.
Supercharge Your UPI Payments
Until recently, small daily transactions made via UPI from your bank account earned you nothing. The game has changed with the ability to link RuPay credit cards to UPI apps like GPay, PhonePe, and Paytm. This is a uniquely Indian advantage. By linking a rewards-earning RuPay credit card, every scan-and-pay transaction at a local merchant can accumulate credit card points. This means your smallest purchases—from street food to auto rides—now contribute to your travel fund. Several banks now offer RuPay credit cards, some of which are lifetime-free and designed specifically for UPI spending, offering cashback or reward points on these transactions. This simple step ensures that no spend, no matter how small, goes unrewarded.
Master Welcome Bonuses and Milestones
One of the fastest ways to accumulate a large number of points is through welcome bonuses and milestone benefits. Many travel credit cards offer a substantial chunk of bonus points or even a complimentary flight ticket just for signing up and meeting a minimum spending threshold within the first few months. For instance, a card might offer 10,000 bonus miles after spending ₹1.5 lakh in the first 90 days. Beyond the initial bonus, cards also reward you for consistent usage. Milestone benefits can include bonus points, lounge access, or free flight tickets upon reaching annual spending targets of, say, ₹3 lakh or ₹5 lakh. Strategically timing big-ticket purchases around these milestones can significantly boost your points balance and get you closer to that free flight.
The Art of Points Transfer and Redemption
Earning points is only half the battle; redeeming them wisely is where you extract maximum value. Simply using points on a bank's travel portal to book flights often gives you a low value per point. The real secret lies in transferring your bank's reward points to an airline's frequent flyer program. This method can multiply the value of your points significantly, especially for booking business class seats. Before transferring, always check the transfer ratio (e.g., 2 bank points = 1 air mile) and the award seat availability on the airline's website. Remember that once points are transferred to an airline program like Club Vistara or British Airways Avios, the transfer is usually irreversible. It pays to do a little research to ensure you're getting the best deal for your hard-earned points.
Develop Smart Spending Habits
To truly optimise, integrate your rewards strategy into your daily life. Use your primary travel card for all possible expenses, including utility bills, insurance premiums, rent payments, and online shopping. Many cards offer accelerated rewards on specific categories like dining, travel bookings, or international spending, so use the right card for the right transaction. Always pay your credit card bills in full and on time to avoid interest charges that would negate the value of your rewards. Consolidating your family's spending onto one or two primary cards (using add-on cards) can also help you reach spending milestones faster and pool points more effectively. The goal is to channel your existing, necessary expenditure through a rewards-earning pipeline.
