of health goals. The appeal is understandable. Protein is crucial for building and repairing tissues, supporting immune function, and creating enzymes and hormones. Popular diets often frame it as a simple formula for success: eat more protein to build muscle, stay full longer, and boost your metabolism. But this simplified approach often overlooks a critical question: how much protein is actually optimal, and does the same amount work for everyone?
What the Science Actually Says
While there isn't one single review of exactly 350 studies, the headline points to a huge and growing consensus in nutrition science built on large-scale analyses. One of the most comprehensive sources is the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), which regularly publishes position stands based on extensive reviews of available literature. Their findings, along with other major meta-analyses, provide the nuance that popular trends often lack. Instead of a one-size-fits-all magic number, the research consistently shows that protein needs are highly individual. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight is considered the minimum to prevent deficiency in most sedentary adults, not the optimal amount for every goal.
Beyond a Single Number
The core message from these extensive reviews is that context is everything. For active individuals, the ISSN recommends a significantly higher intake, typically in the range of 1.4 to 2.0 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, to support muscle repair and growth. Age is another crucial factor. Older adults may require more protein—up to 1.4 to 2.0 g/kg/day—to combat age-related muscle loss, a condition known as sarcopenia. Furthermore, individuals in a calorie deficit to lose weight can benefit from higher protein intakes, around 1.6 to 2.4 g/kg, to help preserve lean muscle mass while losing fat. Some evidence even suggests intakes over 3.0 g/kg could help trained individuals reduce fat mass. These recommendations demolish the idea of a single ideal protein target.
Protein for Weight Management
One of the most common reasons people adopt high-protein diets is for weight management, and the science largely supports this, with some caveats. Protein is more satiating than carbohydrates or fats, meaning it helps you feel fuller for longer, which can naturally lead to a lower overall calorie intake. Multiple meta-analyses have concluded that higher-protein diets are effective for weight loss, fat loss, and preserving muscle. However, the benefits are not infinite. Research shows that while a higher protein intake is beneficial, especially during a diet, extremely high levels don't necessarily provide a significant additional boost in satiety or metabolism for everyone.
Timing and Quality Matter, Too

The blanket advice to simply “eat more protein” is incomplete without understanding your unique circumstances.
