Getting There: Bus vs. Private Taxi
Your journey into the Kinnaur valley will likely begin from Shimla. The most significant cost factor is how you choose to travel from there. For the ultra-budget-conscious, the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) is your best friend. An ordinary
bus from Shimla to Reckong Peo, the district headquarters near Kalpa, costs around ₹600–₹660. The journey is a long one, often taking 10 to 12 hours, but the savings are substantial. From Reckong Peo, you can get local buses or shared taxis to Kalpa and Sangla for a nominal amount. On the other end of the spectrum is a private taxi. Hiring a cab for a complete 7-8 day Kinnaur circuit from Shimla can cost between ₹28,000 to ₹40,000, depending on the vehicle and season. A one-way drop from Shimla to Kalpa might cost between ₹5,800 and ₹12,000. While expensive, a taxi offers immense flexibility, comfort, and the ability to stop for photos along one of India’s most scenic routes.
Accommodation in Sangla Valley
Sangla and its surrounding areas like Chitkul and Rakcham offer a wide range of stay options. For budget travellers, homestays and basic guesthouses are plentiful, with prices ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 per night. Hostels like Zostel Sangla offer dorm beds for an even lower price, making them a popular choice for solo travellers. These options often provide simple, clean rooms and the invaluable experience of local hospitality, including home-cooked meals which can cost ₹100-150 for a thali. Mid-range travellers can find comfortable hotels and resorts with better amenities for approximately ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 per night. These establishments often have restaurants, better views, and more spacious rooms. For those seeking luxury, options like Banjara Camps and other high-end resorts can go well above ₹8,000, offering premium services and stunning locations.
Accommodation in Kalpa
Kalpa, famous for its direct views of the Kinner Kailash range, has a similar variety of accommodation. Budget homestays and guesthouses are readily available, particularly in the main village and nearby Roghi. Expect to pay between ₹1,200 and ₹3,000 for a decent room. These places are perfect for experiencing the laid-back Kinnauri lifestyle. Mid-range hotels in Kalpa, often priced between ₹3,000 and ₹6,000, typically position themselves to offer the best mountain views from their rooms and balconies. Many government-run HPTDC hotels also fall into this category, offering reliable if somewhat basic service. Because Kalpa is a major tourist draw, it’s wise to book your accommodation in advance, especially during peak seasons like summer (May-June) and autumn (September-October). Off-season travel can yield significant discounts.
Local Transport and Sightseeing
Once you are in the region, you will need transport for local sightseeing. If you haven’t hired a dedicated taxi for the entire trip, you can rent one locally. A day trip from Sangla to Chitkul (the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border) and back will typically cost between ₹1,500 and ₹2,500. Similarly, hiring a taxi in Kalpa to visit Roghi village, the Suicide Point, and local monasteries might cost around ₹1,000 to ₹2,000. If you are on a tight budget, you can use the local buses that ply between the main towns like Reckong Peo, Sangla, and Kalpa. The frequency can be limited, so it’s essential to check the timings in advance. For shorter distances, shared taxis are also a common and cost-effective mode of transport.
