The Search for 'Better-for-You' Bites
The single biggest driver of this change is a collective shift towards health and wellness. With rising awareness about lifestyle diseases, urban Indian consumers are becoming more mindful of what they eat. This isn't just about avoiding deep-fried items
anymore; it's an active search for nutritional value. Consumers are flipping packets to read labels, seeking out snacks high in protein and fibre while being low in sugar and trans fats. A recent survey found that a staggering 86% of Indian consumers now consider protein an important factor when choosing a snack. This has fuelled the rise of products like baked chips, roasted makhana (fox nuts), millet-based crisps, and protein bars, which have moved from niche gym-goer food to mainstream grab-and-go options.
Convenience for the Urban Hustle
Rapid urbanisation and increasingly hectic lifestyles mean that convenience is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Long commutes and demanding work schedules leave little time for the elaborate preparation that many traditional snacks demand. Consumers need something they can eat on the go, at their desks, or between meetings. This is where packaged and ready-to-eat snacks win big. Portion-controlled packets that are easy to carry and consume without a mess are gaining popularity. The rise of quick commerce and 10-30 minute delivery apps has also fundamentally changed how people discover and buy snacks, allowing smaller, newer brands to compete directly with established giants.
Nostalgia, Reimagined and Repackaged
Interestingly, this new trend isn’t about abandoning traditional Indian foods. Instead, it’s about reinventing them for the modern consumer. Ingredients that have been staples in Indian kitchens for centuries, like millets (jowar, ragi, bajra), makhana, and various seeds, are being given a contemporary makeover. Makhana, once primarily a food for fasting, is now a mainstream superstar, roasted and sold in a variety of flavours like peri-peri and cheese. Similarly, millets are now found in everything from breakfast cereals and crackers to ready-to-cook dosa mixes. These new-age brands are successfully tapping into a sense of nostalgia while delivering on the modern promises of health and convenience.
The Rise of New-Age Brands and Global Tastes
This snacking revolution is being led by a dynamic wave of digital-first startups and direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands. Companies like Snackible, The Whole Truth, Eat Better Co., and Open Secret are disrupting the market with innovative products that cater specifically to the health-conscious and time-poor consumer. They often focus on clean labels, transparent sourcing, and unique flavour combinations. Simultaneously, there's a growing appetite for global flavours, influenced by international travel and pop culture phenomena like K-dramas. This has led to the popularity of snacks like nacho chips with Indian spices, Korean-flavoured crisps, and other fusion products that satisfy the desire for novelty.
