Beyond the QR Code
For hundreds of millions of Indians, UPI is second nature. Scanning a QR code or entering a mobile number to pay for everything from street food to utility bills has become a daily habit. In August 2026 alone, the network processed a staggering 24.51
billion transactions. This system, run by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has been a global model for digital public infrastructure. So far, the focus has been on making payments instant, easy, and accessible. But the next phase, known as agentic AI, is less about the user initiating a payment and more about authorising an intelligent assistant to do it for them.
What Are AI Payment Agents?
Think of an AI agent as a smart, autonomous software program that can perform tasks on your behalf based on a set of rules you define. Instead of just answering questions like a chatbot, an agent takes action. In the context of payments, you could instruct your AI agent: “Order my usual weekly groceries from the local store if the total is under ₹1,500,” and the agent would not only place the order but also complete the UPI payment without needing your approval for that specific transaction. This is made possible by a proposed framework called the Unified Agent Protocol (UAP), which NPCI is reportedly preparing to unveil. The system is expected to build on existing UPI features like 'Reserve Pay', which allows users to block funds for future debits, and 'UPI Circle', which lets a primary user delegate payment authority.
A Glimpse into an Automated Future
The initial use cases are expected to focus on low-value, frequent purchases like groceries, bill payments, and subscriptions. E-commerce platforms are likely to be early adopters, allowing their systems to integrate with these agents for a seamless checkout experience. Over time, the applications could become far more sophisticated. An AI agent could be programmed to automatically buy a product when it hits a certain discount threshold during a sale, or even execute investment instructions based on predefined market conditions. This represents a fundamental shift from users manually completing every transaction to delegating routine financial tasks to a trusted digital assistant.
The New Competitive Arena
This technological shift is setting the stage for the next major battleground in Indian fintech. While Google Pay and Walmart-owned PhonePe currently dominate UPI transaction volumes, agentic AI opens the door for new competition and innovation. The race is on to build the most intuitive, trustworthy, and useful AI agents. Global players are already making moves; Mastercard, for instance, completed its first authenticated agentic transaction in India earlier this year. Fintech firm Pine Labs has also launched its own protocol for AI-led UPI payments. The competition will no longer be just about having the most users, but about providing the smartest and most reliable automated services built on top of the UPI rails.
The Crucial Questions of Trust and Security
Giving an AI program the authority to spend your money naturally raises significant concerns about security, fraud, and liability. A robust framework is essential to ensure that agents operate strictly within their given instructions and cannot be manipulated. The proposed system is expected to include safeguards like strict spending limits, clear audit trails for every transaction, and strong identity checks for both users and agents. Furthermore, NPCI is expected to create a liability framework to determine who is responsible—the user, the bank, or the AI provider—if a transaction goes wrong. Building user trust will be paramount for adoption, as even minor errors could erode confidence in the entire system.
