What is the New 'Package Visa'?
Saudi Arabia has launched a new initiative called the 'Package Visa' to simplify travel for tourists from several countries, including India. This new system bundles the electronic tourist visa (e-visa) application with the booking of flights and accommodation.
Instead of applying for a visa separately through an embassy and then booking travel, this route integrates everything into a single online transaction through approved travel providers. The goal, according to Saudi tourism officials, is to create a more seamless journey for visitors, reducing paperwork and eliminating the need for separate bookings. Once the package is booked and paid for, the e-visa is processed automatically and sent to the traveler via email, often within 24 hours.
The 'Integrated Tourism Package' Explained
The core of this new visa option is the mandatory “integrated tourism package.” This isn't just a loose suggestion; it's a firm requirement. To be eligible, Indian travelers must book a package that includes, at a minimum, confirmed round-trip flights and accommodation at a licensed hotel with at least a four-star rating. These bookings must be made through specific travel and tourism service providers approved by the Saudi Ministry of Tourism. Currently, platforms like Almosafer, Webook, and Reserval are among the approved partners. The package also includes mandatory medical insurance for the duration of the trip. This bundled approach offers convenience but reduces flexibility, as travelers cannot book their flights and hotels independently if they wish to use this specific visa route.
How to Apply and Who is Eligible
The service is currently available to passport holders from seven specific countries: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, and Mexico. The application process is entirely digital and handled by the approved travel partner. A traveler starts by selecting or building a travel package on the partner's website. During the booking process, they will be prompted to upload a copy of their passport and a personal photograph. After completing the payment for the entire package (flights, hotel, and visa fees), the system automatically verifies the information. If all criteria are met, the electronic tourist visa is issued and emailed to the applicant. Travelers under 18 must be part of a booking with an adult.
How It Compares to Other Visa Options
This new Package Visa is an alternative, not a replacement, for existing visa routes for Indians. Previously, and still available, are other options. For instance, Indian passport holders who have a valid and previously used visa from the USA, UK, or Schengen area can still apply for an e-visa or obtain a visa on arrival, provided they fly with a Saudi national carrier like Saudia or Flynas. Those without such visas would typically apply through a more traditional consulate or VFS Global process. The Package Visa's main advantage is its simplicity and speed for those who don't have a qualifying US or UK visa and prefer an all-in-one booking experience. Its disadvantage is the lack of freedom to choose budget accommodation or hunt for separate flight deals, as the package has minimum criteria.
Costs, Duration, and Key Considerations
The visa itself, issued through this program, is typically a single-entry tourist visa tied to the dates of the booked trip. The allowed duration of stay can be up to 90 days. The total cost is wrapped into the package price, which includes the visa fee (around SAR 300), mandatory insurance, flights, and the hotel stay. While convenient, travelers should compare the total package cost against booking components separately through other visa routes to see which is more economical. This initiative is designed to encourage longer stays and higher tourism spending by bundling services. It offers a streamlined, digitally-led path to visiting the Kingdom, but at the cost of independent travel planning.
