Beyond Fries: The Humble Aloo, Reimagined
Potatoes are a staple, but the air fryer can take them far beyond the usual French fry. Think of perfectly roasted baby potatoes, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Simply toss them with a bit of oil, salt, turmeric, and chaat masala, then air fry until
golden. You can also make restaurant-style potato wedges by cutting potatoes, seasoning them with chilli flakes and herbs, and letting the air fryer work its magic. The result is a satisfying snack or side dish that uses a fraction of the oil of deep-frying.
Crispy Vegetables, No Deep-Frying Needed
Many of our favourite vegetables, like bhindi (okra), gobi (cauliflower), and baingan (eggplant), are often deep-fried to achieve that desirable crispiness. The air fryer offers a healthier path to the same delicious crunch. For 'kurkuri bhindi', slice the okra thin, toss it in a light coating of besan (gram flour) and spices, spray with a little oil, and air fry. The hot circulating air ensures each piece becomes wonderfully crisp. The same method works for gobi and other vegetables, giving you a healthy side dish that feels indulgent.
Restaurant-Style Paneer Tikka at Home
Paneer is a vegetarian hero, and the air fryer makes preparing it incredibly simple. To make paneer tikka, you don’t need a tandoor. Just marinate cubes of paneer in a mixture of yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, and spices like tandoori masala and garam masala. Arrange the marinated cubes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. In about 10 to 12 minutes, you’ll have paneer with beautifully charred edges and a soft, succulent interior, rivalling what you'd find in a restaurant. It's perfect as an appetiser or as the star of a wrap.
The Surprising Breakfast Hack: 'Boiled' Eggs
This may be one of the most unexpected uses for an air fryer: making hard-boiled eggs without any water. It’s a hands-off method that yields surprisingly consistent results. Simply place whole, raw eggs in the air fryer basket and cook them for about 12 to 15 minutes at a moderate temperature, around 130°C. Afterwards, transfer them to an ice bath to stop the cooking process. The yolks turn out creamy and perfectly cooked, making for a quick and easy protein-packed breakfast.
Reviving Leftovers to Their Former Glory
Yesterday's soggy samosas or limp pakoras can be a sad sight. The microwave makes them even soggier, but the air fryer brings them back to life. A few minutes in the hot, circulating air is all it takes to restore their original crunch and warmth. This trick works wonders for everything from spring rolls to leftover naan, which can be turned into crispy, chip-like snacks. It’s a simple way to reduce food waste and enjoy your favourite treats as if they were freshly made.
Healthy Snacking with Roasted Chana and Makhana
Instead of reaching for a packet of fried snacks, you can make your own healthy versions in minutes. Makhana (fox nuts) become incredibly crunchy in the air fryer. Just toss them with a teaspoon of ghee and your favourite seasonings like salt and pepper or peri-peri mix. The same goes for chickpeas (chana); after soaking and boiling, you can air fry them with spices for a high-protein, crunchy snack. It’s a far healthier alternative to their deep-fried counterparts, offering a satisfying crunch without the guilt.
