Understanding the Deepfake Threat
A deepfake is a video, image, or audio recording manipulated by artificial intelligence to make it appear as if someone said or did something they never did. Using a technology called generative adversarial networks (GANs), creators can swap faces, clone
voices, and create highly realistic but entirely fabricated scenarios. Listen for a flat, robotic, or monotonous delivery, even when the subject is supposed to be expressing strong emotion. The audio might sound unusually clean, with a complete lack of background noise or the small, natural sounds of breathing between words. Any strange rhythm, pacing, or clipped words could indicate that the audio is synthetically generated.
Always Question the Context
Beyond technical flaws, the context of the video is one of your most powerful verification tools. Before you even consider sharing, pause and ask critical questions. Who is sharing this video? Is it a reputable news organisation or an unverified account? Does the content seem out of character for the person depicted? Often, deepfakes are used to push an urgent, emotional, or outrageous message designed to bypass your critical thinking. If a video from an unknown source is making an extraordinary claim, your default position should be skepticism. A quick search to see if credible news outlets are reporting the same information can often debunk a fake in seconds.
Use Tools to Dig Deeper
While human observation is key, several free tools can help you investigate suspicious videos. A reverse image search is a simple but effective first step.
