What is the current alert in Uttar Pradesh?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rain across many parts of Uttar Pradesh. These warnings are part of the broader advance of the southwest monsoon, which is progressing across North India.
While some parts of the state, particularly Eastern UP, are still experiencing heatwave conditions, this is expected to give way to widespread rain and thunderstorms. The IMD has forecast thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph for western Uttar Pradesh and has advised residents to remain cautious. Alerts are in place for more than a dozen states as this large weather system moves through.
Are these warnings 'global'?
The headline's mention of "globally" can be misleading. The current IMD alerts are specific to India and are part of a regional weather system—the southwest monsoon. While severe thunderstorms are a worldwide phenomenon, and various services collect and display global weather warnings, the present alert for Uttar Pradesh is not part of a single, coordinated global issuance. Instead, it is a national and regional forecast. Different countries issue their own alerts based on local conditions. The current activity in UP is tied to the monsoon's advance and its interaction with local atmospheric conditions.
Why are these storms happening now?
The thunderstorms are a result of several factors converging. The primary driver is the southwest monsoon, which carries significant moisture. This moisture-laden air interacts with the intense heat that has been prevalent on the ground, creating atmospheric instability. A triggering mechanism, such as a western disturbance (cool, dry upper-level winds), can lift this warm, moist air rapidly, causing it to cool and form towering thunderclouds. This process of convection, when supercharged by high heat and abundant moisture, leads to the development of severe thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain, and dangerous lightning.
Which areas are most affected?
The IMD has issued alerts covering large swathes of the country, with specific warnings for both western and eastern Uttar Pradesh. According to a recent IMD press release, West UP is expected to see thundersqualls and gusty winds, while East UP will transition from heatwave conditions to thunderstorms towards the end of June. The monsoon is expected to advance into more parts of Uttar Pradesh over the next few days. Alerts are not just for UP; 17 states in total are under 'orange' and 'yellow' alerts for heavy rain and thunderstorms, including Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra.
How to stay safe during a thunderstorm
Official authorities urge residents to take precautions. The most important advice is to stay indoors and avoid open areas during a thunderstorm to reduce the risk from lightning. Do not take shelter under trees, as they are frequent targets for lightning strikes. Unplug electrical appliances to prevent damage from power surges. If you are travelling, avoid waterlogged areas and do not drive through flooded roads. Stay updated with the latest forecasts from the IMD, as thunderstorm conditions can develop rapidly and change course with little warning. Farmers and fishermen in affected areas are especially advised to heed warnings and avoid going out.
