If you're travelling out of Varanasi, it's crucial to take note of this update. The timetable change does not affect all Vande Bharat trains, but specifically targets two services departing from the city. The trains with revised schedules are the Varanasi-Ranchi
Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20888) and the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22500). This adjustment by the Northern Railway is aimed at improving operational efficiency. The change is only for the departure from Varanasi; timings at all subsequent stations on both routes remain unchanged.
The New Timings: A 10-Minute Difference
The schedule revision for both trains involves a departure that is 10 minutes earlier than before. While it may seem like a minor adjustment, it is critical for passengers to avoid missing their train. The new timings are effective from September 2, 2026. For the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (20888), the old departure time was 4:05 PM. The new, earlier departure time is 3:55 PM. For the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (22500), the old departure time was 6:20 AM. The new, earlier departure time is 6:10 AM. Travellers accustomed to the previous schedule will need to adjust their plans to reach the station earlier.
Why This Small Change Is a Big Deal
A 10-minute shift can make all the difference between a smooth journey and a missed train. For the morning service to Deoghar, passengers arriving at 6:15 AM, who would have previously been on time, will now find the train has already departed. Similarly, those planning to catch the afternoon train to Ranchi must now be prepared for a 3:55 PM departure. Indian Railways has urged passengers to double-check the updated schedule before their journey to avoid any last-minute hassles. This simple change requires a mental reset for frequent travellers and careful planning for first-timers.
Connecting Spiritual and Commercial Hubs
The two affected Vande Bharat services connect Varanasi to important destinations for pilgrimage and business. The Varanasi-Deoghar service is a vital link for pilgrims visiting the revered Baba Baidyanath Jyotirlinga temple in Jharkhand. The Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat, which was flagged off in March 2024, connects the spiritual city to the capital of Jharkhand. It operates six days a week (except Tuesday) and passes through key stations like Gaya, Bokaro Steel City, and Muri, completing its 536-kilometre journey in approximately 7 hours and 50 minutes.
Is the Delhi-Varanasi Train Affected?
It is important to clarify that this timetable change does not impact India's very first Vande Bharat Express, the flagship service running between New Delhi (NDLS) and Varanasi (BSB). The schedule for train numbers 22436 and 22435 remains the same. The New Delhi to Varanasi Vande Bharat (22436) continues to depart from New Delhi at 6:00 AM and arrive in Varanasi at 2:00 PM. The return train from Varanasi to New Delhi (22435) also operates on its existing schedule. Passengers travelling on this prime route do not need to adjust their plans based on this recent announcement.
