The Allure of 'Pre-Approved' Offers
As festivals approach, banks and financial institutions ramp up their marketing, sending out a flurry of messages about pre-approved personal loans and credit cards. These offers feel exclusive and convenient, promising instant access to funds for festive
shopping, home renovation, or a new vehicle. A pre-approved offer means the lender has done a basic check on your credit history and believes you are a reliable borrower. However, this is not a final approval. The advertised terms, especially the interest rate, can change once you formally apply and the lender does a more thorough evaluation. They are often timed strategically, arriving when your account balance might be low, tempting you into borrowing more than you need.
The Most Common Trap: Processing Fees
The most frequently overlooked charge is the processing fee. Lenders present this as a necessary administrative cost to cover application review, document verification, and disbursing the loan. This fee typically ranges from 0.5% to as high as 4% of the total loan amount, plus GST. Crucially, this fee is often deducted upfront from the loan amount disbursed to you. For example, on a pre-approved loan of ₹2,00,000 with a 2% processing fee, you will only receive ₹1,96,000 in your account, but you will be paying interest on the full ₹2,00,000. This effectively increases the overall cost of your loan before you have even started repaying it.
Beyond Processing: Other Hidden Charges to Spot
The fine print of a loan agreement can hide several other charges that inflate your costs. Be wary of prepayment or foreclosure penalties; these are fees charged if you decide to pay off your loan early. Late payment fees are another significant cost, often a fixed amount plus penal interest on the overdue EMI. Some lenders also include charges for duplicate statements, loan cancellation, or even for paying your bill in cash at a branch. For credit cards, watch out for cash advance fees, which come with high interest from day one, and over-limit fees for spending beyond your approved credit limit.
Decoding the Fine Print: Your Smart Checklist
Before accepting any pre-approved credit, pause and investigate. Always read the complete terms and conditions, no matter how long or dense they seem. Pay close attention to the Annual Percentage Rate (APR), which reflects the true cost of the loan, including interest and fees. Do not be swayed by a low-interest rate advertisement, as the final rate offered to you could be higher. Ask the lender to provide a detailed breakdown of all applicable charges: processing fees, prepayment penalties, late fees, and any other administrative costs. Compare this offer with others you might have; a pre-approved offer is not always the best deal available.
Festive Spending Without the Financial Strain
The best way to enjoy the festive season is to spend within your means. Start by creating a detailed budget for all your festive expenses, from gifts to travel. If you get a festive bonus, consider allocating a portion towards your savings or investments before you start spending. Try to avoid taking on new debt for non-essential purchases. Using cash, a debit card, or UPI for your shopping can help you stick to your budget and avoid the temptation of credit. The goal is to create happy memories, not a mountain of debt that will follow you into the new year.
