In the last two years, an entire economy has sprung up around AI education. From online courses and university-backed programmes to government initiatives, professionals are enrolling in droves, eager to gain an edge in a rapidly evolving job market.
This isn't surprising, given that workers with in-demand AI skills can earn a significant premium. The certificate has become a quick, visible signal of ambition and awareness. For many, it's the first step towards future-proofing their careers, a way to show they are keeping pace with technology. However, as the number of certifications explodes, their individual value is coming under scrutiny.
Why Classroom Badges Aren't Enough
Hiring managers across India are becoming more discerning. They've seen countless resumes decorated with AI certificates, only to find that candidates struggle to apply concepts in a real-world business context. According to a joint report by Indeed and Nasscom, half of employers now prioritise demonstrated AI capabilities over formal degrees. The problem is a 'readiness gap': many courses teach the theory of AI but fail to prepare students for the messy, complex realities of building, deploying, and maintaining AI systems. Employers are no longer just asking, "Do you know what a large language model is?" They're asking, "Can you build an application with one that solves a business problem?" A certificate proves you've studied; it doesn't prove you can execute.
What 'Real AI Work' Looks Like
So, what are employers looking for instead? The answer is a portfolio of 'real AI work'. This doesn't mean a simple script from a tutorial. It means end-to-end projects that demonstrate your ability to solve a problem. Think about building a functional application using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to query a specific set of documents, or fine-tuning an open-source model for a niche task and documenting the performance improvements. It could be a contribution to an open-source AI project or a detailed analysis on Kaggle that shows your process. Hiring managers confirm that a strong project portfolio is often weighed as heavily, if not more so, than certifications. This is because a project shows initiative, problem-solving skills, and a practical understanding of the tools involved.
Skills That Signal True Expertise
Beyond a portfolio, employers are hunting for specific, high-value skills that reflect the maturity of the AI industry. The focus is shifting from simply building models to making them operational. MLOps (Machine Learning Operations) is a critical skill, with nearly a third of employers prioritising the ability to deploy, monitor, and scale AI systems. Expertise in cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud is also non-negotiable, as this is where AI applications live. Newer, fast-growing areas include agentic AI—designing autonomous systems that can perform tasks—and context engineering, which focuses on providing models with the right information to generate useful outputs. Underlying all of this is a strong foundation in Python, data analytics, and the ability to communicate complex ideas to non-technical stakeholders.
How to Build and Showcase Your Experience
For aspirants, the path forward is clear. While a well-chosen certificate from a reputable source like Google, Microsoft, or an IIT can open doors, it should be paired with hands-on work. Start by building one or two meaningful projects that align with the jobs you want. Document your entire process on GitHub, including the problem you were trying to solve, your methodology, the code, and your results. Write a clear README file that explains your project to a recruiter in 60 seconds. When you get to the interview stage, be prepared to discuss the challenges you faced and the trade-offs you made. This narrative of practical problem-solving is far more compelling to a hiring manager than any badge on your profile. It shows that you are not just a learner, but a builder.
