An All-Weather Gateway to Paradise
The dream of a seamless, all-weather rail link to the Kashmir Valley is now a reality. The Vande Bharat Express runs on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a monumental feat of engineering that conquers the region's challenging terrain.
For tourists, this marks the end of travel uncertainty. No longer are trips at the mercy of landslides or heavy snowfall on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, which could previously strand travellers for days. This reliable connection provides a dependable alternative to road and air travel, ensuring that holiday plans can proceed without weather-related disruptions, especially during the coveted winter season when the valley is draped in snow. The train service, which became fully operational between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar in April 2026, has already proven so popular that a third daily service was approved to meet the high demand.
A Journey Through Engineering Marvels
This is no ordinary train ride; the journey itself is a spectacular event. The Vande Bharat route takes passengers across 943 bridges and through dozens of tunnels, showcasing some of India's most ambitious infrastructure projects. The undisputed highlight is crossing the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, soaring 359 metres above the riverbed—taller than the Eiffel Tower. The train's modern coaches are equipped with large panoramic windows, offering breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the majestic Pir Panjal mountains and deep valleys below. Passengers can sit back in comfortable, reclining seats inside a heated cabin and watch the dramatic landscape unfold. The experience is a far cry from the exhausting road journey it replaces, turning travel time into a memorable part of the vacation itself.
From a Full Day to a Few Hours
Perhaps the most significant change for any tourist is the drastic reduction in travel time. The punishing 8-to-11-hour drive from Jammu to Srinagar has been compressed into a comfortable journey of approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes by train. This time-saving aspect is a game-changer for holiday planning. What was once a full day lost to transit is now a pleasant morning ride, arriving in Srinagar by lunchtime. This efficiency makes shorter trips and weekend getaways to the valley a much more viable option. The Vande Bharat departs Jammu Tawi in the morning and reaches Srinagar before noon, with a return journey in the afternoon, allowing for maximum sightseeing time. With fares starting at a reasonable price point, it presents an affordable, fast, and stress-free alternative.
New Possibilities for Your Itinerary
The Vande Bharat Express doesn't just connect two cities; it links entire travel circuits. The route includes a stop at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, a major hub for pilgrims. This allows travellers to seamlessly combine a spiritual pilgrimage with a scenic tour of the Kashmir Valley, something that was logistically complex before. Tourists can complete their darshan at Vaishno Devi and board the train to continue their journey to Srinagar the same day. Furthermore, the improved connectivity is expected to boost tourism in less-explored destinations along the route, encouraging visitors to discover areas beyond the usual hotspots of Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. By making the entire region more accessible, the train empowers tourists to plan more diverse and comprehensive Kashmiri itineraries with ease.
