The End of the Off-Season
The long-held belief that monsoons were a time to stay home is officially a thing of the past. Travel and hospitality companies are reporting a significant surge in bookings for the rainy season. According to data from travel platform Cleartrip, hotel
bookings across India have jumped by over 54% this monsoon season compared to last year, with bus bookings seeing a massive 140% increase. This shift shows a growing appetite for shorter, more flexible road trips to destinations that come alive in the rain. Major hotel chains like Radisson Hotel Group have noted that the monsoon is now seen as a preferred travel season, with July bookings pacing nearly 10% ahead of the previous year. This trend is driven by younger travellers, who are increasingly seeking out experience-led getaways and destinations with fewer crowds and vibrant, rain-washed landscapes.
Why the Sudden Rush?
Several factors are fuelling this monsoon travel boom. After years of being confined, travellers are no longer waiting for the traditional summer or winter holiday windows. Instead, they are making the most of extended weekends and public holidays for shorter, nature-focused trips. There is also a change in mindset, with travellers prioritising experiences over simply visiting a destination. Many are seeking wellness retreats, spiritual journeys, and outdoor adventures that are often enhanced by the monsoon climate. Kerala, for example, has successfully promoted the monsoon as the best season for Ayurvedic treatments. Furthermore, the India Meteorological Department's forecast for a slightly below-normal monsoon in 2026 has given travellers more confidence, suggesting fewer road closures and more predictable travel conditions in popular spots like the Western Ghats.
Where Everyone Is Going
Hill stations and destinations with lush landscapes are the biggest winners this season. Wayanad in Kerala has emerged as a chart-topper, with hotel bookings surging by over 160%. Other southern gems like Alleppey (up 145%), Kodaikanal, and Ooty (both up 70%) are also seeing explosive growth. Perennial favourites like Coorg, Munnar, and Lonavala continue to draw crowds with their mist-covered hills and coffee plantations. It's not just the south, either. In the north, Rishikesh and Mussoorie have seen searches increase by over 200% and 160% respectively. Even the Northeast is gaining traction, with Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh recording a 62% increase in flight bookings and a 90% rise in hotel stays. And despite the rain, coastal destinations aren't being left out; Goa has seen hotel bookings grow by over 110%.
How to Navigate the Crowds
With this newfound popularity comes tighter availability and potentially higher prices, even with some off-season discounts still available. To secure your perfect monsoon escape, planning is key. First, book well in advance, especially for popular destinations and long weekends. Travel companies are encouraging early bookings with monsoon-specific sales and holiday packages. Second, be flexible with your dates. Travelling on weekdays can often yield better deals and thinner crowds. Third, consider exploring offbeat locations. While Wayanad and Munnar are booming, nearby destinations might offer similar beauty with more tranquility. Look for smaller towns in the Western Ghats or the Himalayan foothills. Finally, think beyond just hotels. Homestays and eco-resorts can offer unique experiences, and booking a treehouse or a plantation villa can make the rainy season feel even more special.
